debut,The Kick Insideand that disc still to this day affects an incredible number people, Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan among them. There are so many elements that make this disc unique--Kate's soaring soprano, her warm piano playing--but the one thing that perhaps sticks out most is how different her sounds were from anything else circulating at that time. Ten years before "alternative" hit the forefront, this music was neither easy nor palatable, truly an alternative from the other styles out there. Among the more legendary tracks, search out "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" and her timeless classic "Wuthering Heights".--Denise Sheppard

It established Kate as not only a unique talent but one who may even turn out to be indispensable. Wuthering Heights was the first ever Number 1 UK single to be both written and performed by a female artist, an achievement not to be scoffed at.

The closing The kick inside is also of astonishingly high quality. Again, there is little more than Kate with a her piano but it is ever so poignant, you can almost see the piano keys rolling and beckoning you to become one with the song.

Kate Bush was discovered in 1975 when David Gilmour of Pink Floyd recommended her to record company EMI. Gilmour immediately knew that she was a rare talent and on releasing this debut album Kate would soon reveal herself to be a true eccentric genius. All of the songs featured here on The Kick Inside were written while she was a teenager and this includes the chart topping single Wuthering Heights, which had been released as a single prior to the album. It established Kate as not only a unique talent but one who may even turn out to be indispensable. Wuthering Heights was the first ever Number 1 UK single to be both written and performed by a female artist, an achievement not to be scoffed at. I’m sure we’ve all heard Wuthering Heights and it’s a gleaming example of what is on offer throughout the entire album; lusciously composed pieces of music topped off with Kate’s unique vocals rising to the occasion and governing each song.
Songs that win more than my usual share of approval are the opening Moving and The Saxophone Song. They both share extremely gorgeous melodies with equally charming vocals. A surge of whale sonar instigates Moving before Kate swoops in and breaks the relaxed atmosphere with her youthfully exuberant vocal range. The chorus is an utter delight, “How I moved, how you moved me, with your beauty’s potency. You give me life, please don’t let me go, you crush the lily in my soul”.
The majority of the songs on the second side leave Kate with her piano and very little else in the way of other instruments. These songs are the most intimate amongst the set and were no doubt written as Kate was becoming more sexually aware. Take the latter section of Feel It’s leading verse, “Locking the door, my stockings fall onto the floor, desperate for more. Nobody else can share this, the glorious union, well it could be love, or it could just be lust but it will be fun.” It is rare that an artist, especially one of such tender years, is so personal and revealing as Kate is here. It is something to look back on in admiration and it is certainly to be cherished in the world of today’s manufactured pop icons.
Another favourite of mine is Oh to be in love. The talented musicianship really shines through in the arrangements here and the chorus is one so sincerely heartfelt and full of life that I just want to fall to the floor and start weeping with joy. Room for the life is equally exquisite; Kate wearing the heart of many women on her sleeve as she bears the longing that lies within to raise a child. The closing The kick inside is also of astonishingly high quality. Again, there is little more than Kate with a her piano but it is ever so poignant, you can almost see the piano keys rolling and beckoning you to become one with the song.
The entire album has an almost dream like quality to it and Kate’s magical voice evokes thousands upon thousands of emotions as one track runs into the next. If you’ve heard and enjoyed Wuthering Heights then I can report that the entire album is full of such enchanting melodies and musicianship. I can whole heartedly recommend this album to anyone with even a passing interest in Kate Bush.
I was worried that I was initially getting carried away, but after some earnest contemplation I concede that this is a definite masterpiece and a landslide victory for Kate Bush.

Advantages: She'll keep you well entertained! Disadvantages: Some songs may be a bit rough.
Kate released 'The Kick Inside' in 1978 way before I was born. Looks like I missed out the most greatest opportunity to rush out and buy this album!! This album is outstanding infact. This is the type of music I would like to see out in the charts. Unfortunately times have changed and we get more teeny boppers taking club music and awful pop music to the top of the charts. None of it is hardly sensational. Seems like the same old thing every week. ... ...charts. Her debut album, The Kick Inside, was also released the following month and sold over one million copies in Britain. I bet you're thinking 'Wow.' Well, it is 'wow' Kate was massive and still is massive with her many loyal fans. Including myself. As you can see the album shot Kate into the limelight and she produced many more albums after. I bought this album after I got a taste of 'Hounds of Love,' and 'The Red Shoes.' I was fascinated by ...

...album for any artist "The Kick Inside" is a remarkable effort for an 18 year old. Combining as it does mature lyrics, beautiful melodies and an otherworldly quality it heralded the arrival of a major talent on the British music scene. Kate Bush was discovered at fifteen by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame. Contracted to EMI they kept her under wraps for three years while she developed her voice, dance and mime skills and honed her music. Many others express her belief in the supernatural and the esoteric such as "Strange Phenomena" which explores inexplicable coincidences and "Them Heavy People" which lists some of her spiritual influences. Bush is an accomplished pianist and is heard on nearly all the tracks. ...

...most astonishing fact concerning "The Kick Inside "is that it was written and performed by an 18 year old girl, who had never made a record before ,think about that for a minute then transform that circumstance to todays reality pop fodder full of 18 year old girls who could barely play the recorder ,seen from that perspective "The Kick Inside " is a monumental achievement and a worthy start to a much deserved long and credible career ...

...on the release of "The Kick Inside".
When you heart the opening strangled seagulls (echoes of Pink Floyd's "Echoes") that introduce you to "Moving" you know you're in for something different. This is a work of great beauty, and everyone who knows the album has their own favourites but it is a total aural delight.
The album spawned several singles, "Wuthering Heights", "The Man With The Child in His Eyes" (apparently written when she was 14) and ... ...Heights" is a masterpiece, and one of the most unusual song formats ever put together. (I 've sung it a la China Drum - thrash band from South Shields - myself so I know how difficult it is).
Although the album is over twenty years old it still sounds as fresh today as on it's first release.
As well as writing all the song , the cover concept was by Kate as well. I'm amazed that she's managed to keep herself private , and continually produce excellent ...

Advantages: Some good tracks Disadvantages: Not as good as Kick Inside
Although Lionheart - recorded over 10 weeks in the autumn of 1978 and released that December - indicated a progression in the career of KateBush, it was undoubtedly recorded too quickly after the mammoth The KickInside to offer clear indications of any musical development. After Lionheart, EMI allowed Kate almost total control over her pace of work and the release of new material.
Nonetheless, the album consolidated her right to the top newcomer, female singer and songwriter awards for 1978, and it included a number of fine tracks like Symphony In Blue, Don?t Push Your Foot On The Heartbrake and Oh England My Lionheart, the latter a beautifully crafted tribute to the mother country complete with mandolin from brother Paddy. The song encapsulated Kate?s Englishness and went some way to explaining why, by the mid Eighties, she had ...
Advantages: Pure Kate Bush- worth the money. Disadvantages: Some will find it too quirky.
This is my first ever review, so I chose a subject close to my heart - KateBush's music.
Having spent my melancholy teen years accompanied by a KateBush soundtrack, I had been disappointed with "The Red Shoes", and longed for the glory days of "Never Forever", "Lionheart" and "The KickInside" - those are listed in my order of preference !
From the haunting first track on "Aerial", the upbeat "King of the Mountain", the "King" being Elvis, the album takes on a more mature tone than her earlier works, and my favourite track on CD1, "Mrs. Bartolozzi", is the quirky Kate which people find amazingly innovative or totally bonkers! It is a song seemingly about housework, yet magically soulful when you hear the lilting voice, the music and the underlying sadness in relationships.
Her multi-octave range is evident throughout ...
Advantages: Big due to the remastered version. Kate Bush at her very best. Disadvantages: a couple of unnecessary tracks.

5. Burning The Bridge
6. My Lagan Love
With the exception of Mother Stands For Comfort, every track on the first half of the album contains a special energy captured by it's rolling drum beats, effortless harmony and Kate's melodic voice that always speaks with true passion. Not to mention some of here most inspiring lyrical compositions to date, seen mot prominently in Cloudbusting. Hounds of Love is accessible, long lasting, tremendous pop that KateBush fans most usually consider to be her best work, interestingly the only music that she produced herself.
The Ninth Wave starts with KateBush's return to the piano that fans saw so much of in her earlier album The KickInside. A much calmer track, And Dream of Sheep contains only piano, voice and miscellaneous samples, a well timed break from the energetic ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Kate Bush (vocals); David Paton (acoustic guitar, bass, background vocals); Ian Bairnson (guitar, background vocals, bottles); Paul Keogh, Alan Parker (guitar); Paddy Bush (mandolin, background vocals); Alan Skidmore (saxophone); Andrew Powell (keyboards, bass, celeste, bottles); Duncan Mackay (electric piano, organ, clavinet); Bruce Lynch (bass); Stuart Elliott (drums, percussion); Barry De Souza (drums); Morris Pert (percussion). Recorded at AIR London Studios in June 1975, and July and August 1977. In the-mid '70s a friend of Kate Bush's brother brought her talents to the attention of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour. He arranged some demos for her and she was soon signed to EMI Records. Though Bush was only a teenager at the time, EMI decided to give her an advance and sent her off to write songs, and take dance and mime lessons. When she was 16, her handlers decided the time was right, and Bush's first single, "Wuthering Heights," was released. The song was a smash hit (it went to Number One on the UK charts), not only because of her less-than-innocent appearance on the back of London buses, and unlike anything the British market had ever heard. Forced by her sudden success to release an album, THE KICK INSIDE was recorded and released, featuring songs she had written over the previous few years. THE KICK INSIDE is a remarkable debut. Though it's obvious that Kate was a teenager at the time, there is a frightening amount of talent packed into these 13 songs and evidence of a knowing well beyond the singer's years.
