continues to be records made as fine as Kicking The National Habit, the debut LP from Grand National, it's easy to be convinced that a spot of nostalgia is no bad thing. Whereas bands such as the Rapture and Radio 4 resurrect the darker side of post-punk, this north London duo--comprising multi-instrumentalists Rupert Lyddon and Lawrence Rudd--hail back to the genre's more tuneful outfits: think less the abstruse death disco of PiL, and more the melancholy neo-pop melodics of XTC, the Police, and Talk Talk. Still, this is no out-and-out retro piece. Grand National's main skill lies in their ability to twin their fine songs to tight electronic productions, striking the perfect midpoint between live organics and cool digital sequencing: hear how "Playing in the Distance" hooks a weighty club beat to robust live bass and shrieking brass, or "Cherry Tree", which builds its sad rock elegy on a foundation of chic disco beats. --Louis Pattison
Advantages: great guitarist and excellent lyrics Disadvantages: too much like a jamming session?
...john butler is one of the greatest guitarists i have ever heard! he is very famous in Australia, but not so much here in the United Kingdom. i first heard of him from a friend and i really love his music. the john butler trio isnt everyones cup of tea though! to some his music just sounds like a continuos jamming session. he has recently done a tour of the United Kingdom, and GrandNational, is the latest cd to be relaesed by the John Butler Trio. in my opinion this is not his best cd, that would have to be Sunrise Over Sea, i personally would recommend that you bought that one first. GrandNational sounds a bit like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, very full of energy....

Advantages: great music, catchy tunes Disadvantages: some songs are too long
...excellent cd by an excellent artist. i have been addicted to this cd since i first heard it two months ago. marginally better than the John Butler Trios latest cd GrandNational, which is a slightly different style to the styles of the John Butler Trios earlier album. these are definately three guys who want to make a positive change to the environment through the music which they clearly enjoy playing. was a very popular cd in Australia and reasonably popular in France, but for some reason never made it over here in the United Kingdom. not everyone will like this style of music, it is chill out music, sounds like three guys having fun jamming together. this cd was released after Three, but before GrandNational....

Advantages: that it sounded better then british version and they go on about life in there songs Disadvantages: it wasnt always easy to get when it first come out where i live
...I think Ace a Bace was one of the best groups when they first come out it wasnt until they braught out life's like a flower i started to go off of them they wern't sounding as good as they used to and i think people were a little put off bye this.
I have got there happy nations (us version) and i found it much better then the british version it seened to have more kick to it more base most deffently my hi-fi can't hardley handle the base and it was faster as well. i think that the american version gets my vote anytime.
well i will always keep there old songs on tape or cd another one i have of there is tokyo girl and that is one of my faverites....
