After releasing one of the best albums of the '90s in the form of Ok Computer this album came along as something of a shock in 2000. The album represented a brave new direction for the band with the riff heavy guitars of previous efforts replaced by a far more experimental sound of synths and samples.
This album is actually pretty difficult to appreciate on first listen. Tracks such as National Anthem, Idioteque and Optimistic stand out immediately but the genius of tracks such as Kid A and How to Disappear Completely will slowly become apparent on repeated listens.
---Pick of The Bunch---
First track Everything in its Right Place is an intriguing track driven by synthesised keyboards. The vocals of singer Thom Yorke have been sampled and warped to create a pretty trippy intro track that draws you into the album.
National Anthem is a roaring fuzz bass monster accompanied by some of the eeriest trumpeting I've ever heard. The same bass line is repeated over and over throughout the song while the trumpets build up as the song progresses reaching a howling and chaotic finale at the end of the song.
Optimistic - A glorious mix of guitars and synth and actually the only track on the album to feature prominent guitar work. The fast pace drumming and guitar work really gives this song an epic sound and feel- as if the world is falling apart and collapsing around your very person.
Idioteque is arguably the best track on the album a fairly minimalist track with an infectious beat and some synth work in the background. Thom's vocals work really well with the beat and will have you jumping around the room in no time.
Treefingers is probably the least enjoyable track on the album - a rather sparse instrumental track without vocals.
Motion Picture Soundtrack is another one of my favourites. It is a slow-paced and sparse song and features what has to be one of Thom's best vocals since street spirit (in my opinion!). Thom sings quietly and tenderly over an organ and the song slowly reaches a crescendo, with the organ being replaced by some beautiful strings near the end. A superb track to end the album with.
I strongly feel that Kid A is a criminally underrated album, if not quite up to the high standards of Ok Computer.

Advantages: Completely original, brave, atmospheric sounds Disadvantages: People will only like it if they give it a chance and don't expect it to be the same as their other albums
