Radiohead first appeared in 1993 with their debut album "pablo Honey" and single "creep", which entered charts at no 7. they then released "The Bends" in 1995, and "OK Computer" in 1997. these two albums have recently been voted no 1 and 2 of all time in Q music Magazine. Clearly, the follow up would have been difficult. Radiohead were faced with the following dilemna, what do you do once you have written the best album the world has ever seen (in several critics opinons).
The Answer, take a radical about face, erase all pre-conceptions of yourself, and release an album with more experimentation than anyone could have predicted. Radiohead did not even try to follow Ok Computer, they turned around, and led themselves in new directions, a move that no-one saw coming.
The important thing though, is the experimentation really works. Radiohead have gone into new pastures, and found they are just as good an experimental band as they are a rock one. Nothing somes the album up better than opener "everything in its right place" which before Thom even starts singing, has identified the album as different, and is a piece of melodic genius. The invented instruments, and synthesizers, are just as moving as the singing and guitar in Ok Computer, and make for a brilliant album.
Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar) may be seen to be getting rather bored in the recording of this album, as his guitar is very much pushed into the background, but he deals with the synthezizers, and is the most imporant person in this album.
Of cause, the album does not rely on this new direction, Thom Yorkes singing and lyrics have also been Superb for radiohead, and Kid A is no different, with song like "idioteque" and "Everything in its right place" being sung using Thoms most impressive forsetto.

Kid A: A new instrument, used on the star trek theme, forms a very interesting riff here, with Thom Yorke's voice being distorted by being played through a laptop, but again, the experimentation really works, with great harmonies between the instrument, the bass, and the synthesizers at the end.

The national anthem: With an underlying and solid bass riff, the national anthem embodies everything that is Kid A. There is only one verse in the song, that is repeated over and over, but the dividing bridges are what make the song what it is, with trumpet, and a whole lot more brass, and a whole range of weird and wonderful instruments, the national anthem shows what this album is all about.

How to disappear completely
rather like "exit Music (for a film) on Ok Computer, How to disppear completely is probably the most normal of the tracks on this album. with an accoustic and Thom at the start, leading to a very nice chorus, which eventually builds up to a loud, almost dramatic, climax, this song is definitely one to look out for, and it helps the transition from old to new radiohead run that much smoother.

Treefingers:
Although there are no lyrics in this song, and no singing of any kind, Kid A is not only about this, but treefinges is not a personal favourtie of mine, on a 10 track album (most of them reaching about 5 minutes) a 4 minute long interlude is pointless.

Optimistic:
The first electric guitar of the album is found on optomisitc, and this is the song which is most like its predeccesors from other albums. a solid chorus, in the middle of which Thom belts out "you can try the best you can" a statement of Kid A, which shows there thinking in trying to follow up Ok Computer, a very good song.

In Limbo:
A quiet song, almost like optimistc, except much quiter, and with not as outstanding chorus, in limbo nevertheless is a good song which helps the album move along.

Idioteque:
idioteque shows what Kid A can do, there are no drums in this song, instead, a drum machine is used to provide beat, and the synthesized riff, is one that embodies what Kid A is all about. Thom Yorke's voice is distorted in a way which makes it almost the same as it is, but with a slight echo, which makes the singing go perfectly with the music. a very good chorus, demonstrating Thom's superb vocal range shines through here, and a definite Kid A song, which gives everything Radiohead have done since a good run for its money.

Morning Bell:
Again, using Thom Yorke's great vocals, morning bell does not use a conventional drum beat, and the instrument that backs up thom is the same one used on second track: Kid A, an almost haunting song, which is very similar, although somewhat better, than Kid A, morning bell is a good penultimate song.

Motion Picture Soundtrack:
Starting with an instrument that seems to be a mixture between a violin and a trumpet, Thom enters in with his sterotypical, almost non-sensical mutterings, which are perfect for this song. we then get as noise that sounds exactly like the twinkling of stars, a 7 minute.. very slow paced track, which draws Kid A to a beautiful close, motion picture soundtrack is clearly one to look out for.
A melodic masterpiece from start to finish, Kid A can be thoroughly enjoyed by anyone with an open mind to it, even if it did dissapoint some diehard fans of previous Radiohead.
For me, Kid A ranks as the second greatest Radiohead album, after Ok Computer, but crucially, higher than The Bends, although Radioheads about face was not enough to write the best album ever (again) they have done superbly.

Best Tracks: Everything in its right place, How to disappear completely, Idioteque.
