Radioheads fourth studio album, "Kid A" was released on 2nd October 2000, and created an almost palpable excitment in the music industry and amongst Radiohead's loyal fan base. How could Radiohead produce a follow up to rival OK Computer, rated by many as being quite simply the best album of all time?
They did it by creating an album that simply defies comparison. More form than song, Kid A is a musical journey through the imagination (or Thom Yorke's imagination anyway). The lyrics seem almost randomly constructed, nonsense put together in a way that resonates to leaves a familiar, if forboding, recognition. This is like a musical interpretation of abstract art and is far, far away indeed from the guitar and melody based style of The Bends and it's predecessor Pablo Honey.
With this album Radiohead challenge all the conventions of making music, and it works. Radiohead continue to prove they are the most influential band of the times.
The full track listing is:
1. Everything in its Right Place 2. Kid A 3. The National Anthem 4. How to Disappear Completely 5. Treefingers 6. In Limbo 7. Idioteque 8. Morning Bell 9. Motion Picture Soundtrack
You really do need to give this album time to fully appreciate it. The opening track "Everything in its right place" juxtoposes the vocal (played live the band actually sample Thom Yorkes vocals live which are then played back throgh the track, which is very impressive!).
Track two, Kid A, features computer generated vocals produced through a voice simulator and is really spooky.
My favourite track is "How to Disappear Completely" - this was written in Ireland on the bands OK Computer tour and really sums up the desperation Thom Yorke must have been feeling at the time "I'm not here, this isn't happening" repeated like a mantra a young child might chant, close your eyes to make the world go away.
This is a beautiful piece of work. Enjoy it.
Bye the way - if you bought one of the first few thousand CDs there's a hidden booklet inside the CD case.
Radiohead's fifth studio album, produced by Nigel Godrich, will be called "Amnesiac". It is expected to be out sometime in June. A tracklisting has not yet been announced, but decided.
