So then, the most important and best band Britain have churned out since perhaps the Smiths released their 4th studio album on October 2nd - was it worth the wait? Anyone expecting Another "The Bends" or "OK Computer" would be disappointed, but then when have we ever been able to know what to expect from a band such as Radiohead? Opener "Everything in its Right Place" sets the pace and the mood for the album with distorted lyrics, which are barely audible. Gone are the days for Radiohead where they would just use guitars, vocals and percussion - this album is full of strange noises I guess only Radiohead will know where they emit from. It's certainly not easy listening and this is where a lot of radiohead fans will be disappointed - these aren't songs as such, but journeys through the warped mind of Thom Yorke, somehow captured on vinyl. Best track on the album is probably "Idioteque" which heavily borrows from "Windowlicker" by The Aphex Twin in style and Yorke's vocals are magical on top of the mesmirising beat and noise created by the band. Apart from the die-hard, I imagine a lot of people will be disappointed by this album, but you'll not hear another album so diverse and so intriguing all year. In fact, you probably won't hear another album like this until radiohead release album number 5 which is due in early 2001. The music scene needed radiohead to release this record, especially at the moment where bubble-gum manufactured pop are plaguing the charts. Superb packaging and artwork are the icing on a rather special little cake and Kid A is well worth a few of your hard earned quids. Put simply, essential listening.
