Kill 'Em All is the Metallica Album you buy if you just gotta' have every one in the collection! If you are a fan 90s Metallica, you will not be a fan of 'mullet' Metallica! This fact is sad but true.
Basically, Kill 'Em All is very repetitive and completely and utterly under-produced. With more experience, each and every on of these songs would have been a classic, but influenced by a lot of beer, bad attitudes and shocking haircuts, the Tallica boys didn't really have what it took until 'Ride The Lightning'. I think they have come to accept this themselves - their live shows usually negate most of these songs to medley-format!
Kill Em All is fast, frantic, angry and mean. It defines thrash metal and was a leader in the race for world-wide, black jeans, white hi-top domination! Unfotunately, it is not listener friendly - you really have to be in the mood to sit through this one. The stand-out tracks of this disc are the galloping 'The Four Horsemen', the psychotic 'Seek and Destroy' and the clearly punk influenced 'Motorbreath'.
Although no song is fantastic and even the most die-hard fan man question the effort put into a lot of the tracks, I can see no way that Metallica could validate the inclusion of a three and a half minute Cliff Burton bass-solo ('Pulling Teeth'). He was not Eddie Van Halen of the 4-string -but you musn't let a purist tell you otherwise!
All in all, Metallica did have to start somewhere and it is without a doubt that today they are the most influential metal band in existence. Despite my gripes I still recommend Kill Em All. Buy this album out of curiosity if you must - gain some insight into how much a band can improve with experience, effort and some good fashion tips!
