Advantages: songwriting, emotion, creativity, sonics Disadvantages: only thirty six minutes of it!
...Spoon have always garnered critical acclaim, some likening their early sound to that of Pixies, Pavement and other such alternative guitar bands. And yet their sound is undeniably unique; every new record gathers the nuances of previous records and somehow finds something fresh to bring to the mix. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is no exception: at a meagre 36 minutes, it manages to encompass a variety of emotions as well as mysterious sonics. It's the attention to detail and raw sentiment that makes this record possibly their best since A Series Of Sneaks.
1. Don't Make Me A Target: From somewhere emerges an echo-y two-note guitar riff, soon joined by stuttering drums and Britt Daniel's inimitable vocal - agressive, snarly: here's a man with something to say, and he'll make sure he's heard. Advantages: A composer well versed in the art of romantic music. Disadvantages: He died over 60 years ago, so no more new songs.
...Glenn Miller was the best of his era, and the Moonlight Serenade was one of many popular songs of his immortalised in the movie, The Glenn Miller Story.
Although many people think of the Big Band Era as hokey, squeakey clean, and outdated, the music is timeless and it can still be found selling at the record stores. Other artists are continually doing covers of his music, and every once in a while a Miller composition shows up in a movie score.
Most of Miller's music was composed for his band to play without a singer. Later, words were added to his tunes, but I think the music can stand alone on its own merit.
Moonlight Serenade, String Of Pearls, Little Brown Jug...the list goes on. And one has to wonder how Miller's music may have progressed if he were not killed in WWII. It's a shame that we'll never know....

Advantages: Catchy riffs, intense and moody vocals Disadvantages: Songs drag on, too much repetition, lack of a real hook
...The Kills are a two-piece blues/rock hybrid consisting of VV (Alison Mosshart) on vocals and Hotel (Jamie Hince) on vocals and guitar. Allegedly the union of two former pen pals The Kills have been doing the rounds for a while now, touring and writing in preparation for their first full-length release. Their energy filled live shows have gained them many fans in both their home country the US and over here in the UK. On the stages it’s just the two of them while in the background lingers a jet black, HAL like drum machine, the rock upon which all of The Kills songs are built.
Many of The Kills tracks have a lo-fi feel about them. Songs that have seemingly stolen the essence of a song from one of the old delta bluesmen and then revved up the guitar riff to sound like a hook from one of the classic Stooges songs. The Kills songs...
