When you want to consider the great heavy rock albums then this album needs to be considered. The songs are so powerful a number still turn up in the live set I saw last year, 26 years after the album was made!
The Album was released in 1979, and this was the first time I saw them live, and boy was that a show.
In 1979 when this was released, this probably had a claim on the heaviest album ever made (Though I think Motorhead might argue with that claim).
Delivering the Goods is a powerful driving force of a track, letting you know your dealing with an album of serious intent, that shows what a band at their peak can deliver. Rock Forever picks up the pace, and still gets me sort of headbanging even though I'm between 40 and 50!.
Evening Star and Before the Dawn are superb slower numbers, that give the album scope and depth.
Take On the World with its driving solo drum sections, with the killer chant, 'put yourself in our hands, so our voices can be heard, and together we can take on all the world' wow
Hell bent for leather is a classic track, performed live through almost every show since they made the album.
Running Wild, Green Manlishi and Evil Fantasies are powerhouse heavy rock, that are simply timeless.
For Priest fans of the older variety, this album and British Steel are the reason priest are rated at the first table of Heavy rock. Both albums have a depth of quality, and no track on this album is a dud.
If you want a piece of classic heavy rock, this album is it. The difficulty with making a classic, is it can be a noose around your neck, and I guess to some extent this and British Steel were like this for priest.
I could talk all day about the quality, the superb production, the no frills rock, the lyrics, but I think you get the gist, for the heavy rock fans this probably compares to Paranoid, Zep 4, Appetite for destruction etc etc Nuff said.
