played out before uncaring parents, cruel lovers and a husband who tormented her both physically and mentally. But throughout this life she claims to have heard the comforting voice of a long-dead soldier in her head. The plot thickens when Freddie Mercury, superstar of super-band Queen, died after suffering from AIDS in 1991 and almost immediately contacted Richmond from beyond the grave. And what's more, she believes the voice she hears when she talks to Freddie is the voice of the soldier she has heard in her head since childhood and that the bond they formed in a past life has followed them into this one. In It's a Kind of Magic, Richmond attempts to prove that Freddie is with her, tracking down his old acquaintances and adversaries to test their reactions to the voice in her head and drawing on familiar Queen lyrics and other writings by and about Freddie Mercury to establish that, even before his death, he was in some way trying to make spiritual contact with her. It is left to the individual reader to decide whether It's a Kind of Magic is simply the bizarre blatherings of a woman disturbed by her own upbringing and experiences, or whether Richmond is indeed some kind of guardian angel appointed by one of the most peculiarly charismatic and enigmatic icons of the 20th Century to tell his story. Either way, Melinda Richardson tells an outrageously intriguing, if rather rambling, tale that Freddie Mercury afficianados will clamour to read. --Susan Harrison

...talking about Queen's 'A kind Of Magic' album which was released in 1986. This album also doubles up as the soundtrack to the movie 'Highlander' with the exception of the first track 'One Vision' which comes from the movie 'Iron Eagle' (anyone ever seen it because I haven't ?).
Much has already been written about Queen themselves so I'll not over elaborate here. Basically they were formed in the early 1970's but didn't come to real prominence until ... ...with the release of 'A Kind Of Magic'.
1) One Vision
What a track to start the album, bass ridden with an absolutely mind blowing, fast paced drum beat throughout. Brian May contributes with a screeching guitar solo and Freddie Mercury's vocals are as majestic as ever. On a slightly humorous note, the final line of this song should read "Just gimme gimme gimme One vision" but if you listen carefully I am sure that Freddie actually ends with "Fried ...

...in the air, it seems kind of fitting for me to write about Queen.
Released in 1986, many of the songs on Queen's A Kind of Magic album appeared in the film Highlander. Part of the reason I love this album so much is that I'm rather a fan of Highlander, both the film franchise (although the first and last were the only ones worth watching) and the television series (due mainly to a gorgeous long-haired martial artist bloke). Funnily enough, though, ... ...Highlander.

A Kind of Magic

"One dream, one soul, one prize, one goal
One golden glance of what should be"
Finger clicks and Freddie start the title track, but then John Deacon gets a chance to shine. His famous bass riff dominates the track, and so it should. And of course, the fabulous Mercury voice.
There are lots of trademark Queen vocal harmonies too, the obligatory Brian May Brian May twiddling ...

Advantages: some really great songs Disadvantages: not the most musucally innovative album they did, and not enough Brian May solos.
...do something. "A Kind of magic" the line comes from Highlander, when the man himself explains is having failed to die after being shot repeatedly. This song largely refelcts on the plot of the film with lines like "there can be only one" it's a good track, very catchy. "One Year of Love." "Just one year of love is better than a lifetime alone." This was one of the songs that I almost expected to find in Moulin Rouge, but sadly it wasn't there. This ... ...of friendship - its the kind of song for hanging on to a load of comrades and swinging drunkenly from side to side whilst singing. "Who wants to live forever" This is the one song everyone remembers from "Highlander" and from this album - exquisitly painful it dwells on the transience of all things. This song has the power to make anyone cry, the tune is haunting and the mood is eery. An excellent song - worth buying the whole album just for the ...

...the result. Why chose ‘A kind of Magic,’ over such classics like ‘Queen 2’ or ‘Innuendo?’ Possibly because this is my personal favourite. While other Queen albums can have their odd ‘duff’ track, ‘A Kind of Magic’ is pretty much flawless, containing a strain of songs that should appeal to almost everyone. That is one reason. Another reason is that I saw Queen back in ’86 on the ‘A Kind of Magic Tour’, at St James Park Newcastle – this was their last ... ...as this film did, ‘A Kind of Magic’ remains and has remained a colossal structure of infinite goodness… a real toe-tapper…
Its blasts into action with the hit single ‘One Vision.’ Written by Queen, this is a stomper, filled with guitars and strange sounds. It is one of my favourites. Next up is the famous ‘A Kind of Magic,’ which features an easy on the ear chorus and gentle symphony. We have the enchanting ‘One Year of love’ next, followed by ‘Pain ...

...the Queen album " A Kind Of Magic".
For the uninitiated this album is used throughout the original "Highlander" film (and subsequent sequels), and has to rate as one of the best rock albums ever produced, and a defining moment in their work. From the hard rocking "Gimme The Prize" to the haunting ballard of "Who Wants To Live Forever" this is a must buy for anyone with even a small amount of good judgement or taste in music. The track list is as ... ...A Kind Of Magic

The album istelf is a combination of rock, pop and ballards and is a credit to the groups long list of hit albums. The sorely missed Mercury is in superb form, belting out hit after hit with a force which will never be vocally surpassed. The usual meaty guitar ...
