Korn's self titled debut album released in 1994, can easily be heralded as one of the most inspirational albums of all time. In fact, it is arguable the album is so good that the band have spent the rest of their career trying to make anything half as credible. Although it is labelled as the first nu-metal album, in retrospect there is very little than can be compared to future bands that have fallen into the genre. The angst and emotion on display from Jonathan Davis in this album is all very believable; at times disturbing, melancholy and abrasive, we definately feel some torment of a suffering soul.
The album deals with themes such as child abuse (Daddy), depression (Blind), drug dealers (Ball Tongue) and ...Nursery Rhymes (Shoots and Ladders) you could be sitting there saying 'well how the hell does that make this a great album?!', and the simple answer is that great music is created with passion and feeling. Jon Davis has stuck with the old saying, 'write what you know' and the album has a clear sense of that, we can't doubt that Davis' vocals were comitted to recording with a feeling of first hand experience.
It could be easy to criticise the simplicity of the song structures and riffs, along with the raw production however, I have rarely heard anything as memorable and the production values are really what make this album an all time great. David Silveria's trebley and intricate drum patterns weave perfectly with Fieldy's funky bass lines, while Munky and Head use a mix of raw distortion along with creepy effects interjected with Jon Davis' heartfelt vocals for 12 dark and sometimes disturbing anthems.
Forget Nu-Metal; it's a dead genre, forget Korn's more recent (tired) efforts, if you like dark music or music with a real sense of feeling, this album is for you (It can be picked up cheap so why the hell not eh?). Even if you've only heard Korns recent singles and wrote them off as a 'down with the kids' band, buy this album, you may be in for a wicked surprise.

Advantages: Their best album in my opinion, really heavy and flows together. Disadvantages: May be hard to get into first time, but that is probably the point of the album
