About Kurt Nilsen
I first discovered Kurt Nilsen while watching an old World Idol clips on youtube, and his performance blew me away. "I" is Kurt Nilsen's first album following his winning the first Norwegian Idol in 2003 and World Idol (beating Will Young and Kelly Clarkson). Normally I find Pop Idol type winners to be over commercial, releasing a boring, label controlled first album of covers. After his transition from ordinary guy - plumber and father of two, he has become one of Norway's top artists, but although enjoying live performances, he still tries to avoid the limelight if he can.
This album
"Rise To The Occasion" is Kurt Nilsen's most recent album released in Norway. In includes a whole list of great new songs all written or co-written by Kurt, who is a talented singer, songwriter and guitarist with a really unique voice. Many of the other songs on this CD also have more of a country feel than Kurt usual style which is pop/rock.
The track listing is as follows: 1. Last Storm 2. Lost Highway (Duet with Willie Nelson) 3. Stop The Time 4. Second Chance 5. Country Music 6. Rise To The Occasion 7. Four Seasons 8. Mother's Words 9. Working Man 10. Don't Have What It Takes 11. Soon It's Gonna Change 12. Lost Highway - World Headquarters Session (Duet with Willie Nelson)
Song Analysis
'Rise To The Occasion' is my favourite song from the album, the lyrics about his friend being left by her husband are not exactly happy, but the song is so absorbing I can listen to it over and over. 'Stop the Time' is another track I think is worthy of note. It is a very honest song about his life since he became a famous artist in Norway, and among others explains why he doesn't push himself to become more famous worldwide, as he doesn't want to lose time with his wife and 3 kids. I am not particularly, but if you are a country fan Kurt's duet with world famous country singer Willie Nelson will be a real treat, including the live bonus track. I also really enjoy the more upbeat 'Mother's Words' and 'Second Chance', which includes a long uptempo instrumental section.
Conclusion
I love Kurt Nilsen's music and this is another great album from an underrated artist.I would also recommend Kurt's other albums "I", "Push Push" and "A Part of Me", and the live acoustic version of many songs he plays with the "Guitar buddies" Espen Lind, Askil Holm and Alejandro Fuentes.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Sounds interesting - I'm a fan of folk-rock / country-rock music but it's hard to find good examples of the genre. Your review could do with a little more depth though, e.g. some comparisons with other artists (where appropriate) would be useful. All the best, Mike.
