The Stereophonics return with their 5th album and what a cracker it is. The album seems to be the natural progreesion that should have been the 3rd or 4th album, with the raw rockniness back from the first two albums with better, more mature, thought provoking lyrics(well some at least). Particular highlights on the album are Superman, Doorman(Kelly really doesnt like people abusiong their power), Devil (easily the best track on the album, and maybe even one of thier best ever).Dakota, the first single is a good track, if you like this then the album offers more of the same new rockiness but also has a variety of songs which differ from Dakota. Not too sure about the last track Feel, think this is one of the few weak links the album has. However as the album is only 11 tracks long, this seems to have removed the potential for just sticking in average tracks although the album does leave you wanting more. Deadhead(track 10) must be a song written in the early days of the bands life as it seems to follow the songwriting characteristics of the first two albums and fits in well.
Back to the rawness and rockiness of their first two albums, whilst showing the more mature songwriting seen since Jeep, think the band have finally found a formula for mixing the two together. Kelly Jones again stretches and strains his raw vocal style to inject passion and/or anger into the tracks. If you like Stereophonics already, you will love this. Critics of previous work by the band or newcomers to the bands sound, give it a listen I think you will like it. Probably won't be the best album of the year but will be one of. Each to their own though!
