Album Notes: Personnel: Rosemary Clooney (vocals); Matt Catingub (conductor, alto saxophone, piano); Albert Alva, Jeff Prinz (alto saxophone); Matt Cowan (tenor saxophone); Jennifer Lovejoy (baritone saxophone); Dave Scott, Tony Bonsera, Mike Olmos (trumpet); Doug Beavers, Greg Saul (trombone); Dan Parenti (bass); Stephen Moretti (drums); Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. Recorded live at the Neal. S. Blaisdell Concert Hall, Honolulu, Hawaii on November 16, 2001. Includes liner notes by Allen J. Sviridoff. THE LAST CONCERT was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Recorded at the end of a Hawaiian vacation that proved to be her last, this live document is as much a display of Rosemary Clooney's onstage rapport with her audience as of her vocal skills, honed over the previous half-century, as she makes droll quips ande wryly name-checks actor George Clooney (she was his aunt). There's an energetic version of "Old Man River" that positively crackles with excitement, and a poignant tribute to Frank Sinatra in "The Singer," composed by Clooney's drummer, Joe Cocuzzo, followed by an equally moving version of George Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away From Me." But though THE LAST CONCERT was recorded just a couple of months after 9/11 ("God Bless America" is an affecting finale), and Clooney was to succumb to cancer seven months later, there's no sense of pathos here. Rather, one gets the lasting impression that singer, band, and audience are simply having the time of their lives.
Album Reviews: Entertainment Weekly (1/10/03, p.71) - "...Final testaments don't get much more satisfying than this 2001 Honolulu gig that ended up being the 73-year-old "girl singer's" swan song..." - Rating: A

...at the Berlin Planetarium. Presented as a work in progress the new pices were long, experimental mood works, based around Nico omnipresent harmonium and augmented by bass, drums, guitar and piano. The lyrics were fragmentary at best, and frequently the vocals were just wordless chants. But for all the unfinished nature of the pieces it is clear that here are the bones of some stunning new works, and best of all, Nico's vocals were her strongest and most accomplished in ages.
This cd presents the whole concert, unedited, and closes with the encore of "You Forget To Answer" one of Nico's favourites of her own songs. It was to be the last song she would ever perform. Just a few weeks later she fell from her bike in Ibiza. The damage to her brain was too much and she died shortly afterwards.
Fata Morgana is recommened to Nico fans, but perhaps...

...The Vienna New Year's Concert is a tradition somewhat akin to the "Last Night of the Proms" apart from the fact that obviously it is Austrian music that is played, and there is not the same atmosphere. The concert has happened annually since 1939, although originally it used to take place on New Year's Eve rather than New Year's Day, because a poor attendance was feared, after the traditional Austrian "Silvester" revelry.
One other difference is that the New Year's Concert is even more exclusive than the Last Night of the Proms, as you have to apply for tickets two years in advance, and they are exceptionally pricey. Indeed applications for the 2003 concert closed on 2nd January this year. It is an event to be seen at, and is also a musical highlight of the Vienna music scene. Each year since 1987, when the late Herbert von Karajan...
