Background
By the time the Blue Nile: - Paul Buchanan, Robert Bell and P.J. Moore had finished touring and promoting the previous album “Hats” they all felt burned out, Paul Buchanan remembers the early 90’s as a difficult time and so as to try and change things a bit the band decided to buy some equipment and travel to different cities rent a room and write some songs.
This is what they did going to France, Italy, Holland and New York all the while writing and recording a few things.
After the frantic time of the Hats album Paul said, “It felt very claustrophobic and we kept moving, in the process writing and throwing a lot of songs away we discarded most of the stuff we wrote till we finally got the 10 tracks that appear on “Peace at Last” by 1995.
By the summer of 1996 the third ...
Advantages: Tuneful, classic pop-rock,best of the 90s.Lyrically,musically and vocally chairming and catchy Disadvantages: If you dont like pop/rock then you might not enjoy this blast from the past.
Right so today I am really on one with bands/albums ranging from the mid 80s to the late 90s and seeing as I am, what sort of reviewer would I be if I didn't at least give a quick mention to Texas?
Southside by Texas is one of their most acclaimed albums. Released in 1995 with timeless classics like 'I dont want a lover', the album still rings true with audiences today.
Although they have taken their name from an american state, they are essentially a Scottish pop/rock band. Their music does seem to adopt some of the texan stealy guitar sound and although singer and rhythm guiatris Sharleen Spiter has a lovely Scottish accent, she sings with an american accent (which is a shame but common of the era).
This album has some really great pop songs, I dont Want a Lover being one of many. The overal quality of the vocals is really ...
Advantages: Enjoyable, easy read which rewards with plenty of humour Disadvantages: Uses a little too many ideas from the show
'The Last Human' was written by Red Dwarf's co-creator, Doug Naylor. Rob Grant had decided he wished to write a Red Dwarf novel by himself and Doug quickly decided afterwards he would do the same. 'The Last Human' is the result.
'The Last Human' follows Dave Lister and the rest of the Dwarf crew as they try and navigate their way back into their own universe having picked up Lister and Kochanski from the Backwards reality. Having made a mistake with the navi-calcs, the crew find themselves to have passed through the omni-zone, (the point in spacetime where alternate Universes meet) and into the wrong reality, where they find another version of their ship, which in turn leads them on a hunt to find and rescue Lister's otherself - at least, they think he needs rescuing...
I found this book very easy and enjoyable to read. Doug ...

Engineers: Malcolm Harper, Stuart Sullivan, Larry Greenhill. Live tracks recorded at Antone's Nightclub, Austin, Texas. Includes liner notes by Doug Sahm. This 1994 release is a glorious counterpart to Doug Sahm's 1988 album JUKEBOX MUSIC. The collection is a seamless mix of live and studio recordings, all of which celebrate the sounds of the '50s and late '40s--blues, swing, shuffle, boogie and roadhouse--that flooded the state of Texas when Sahm was growing up. His graceful tenor voice effortlessly wraps around the powerhouse of a band he's assembled. The horn section (numbering from three to six players) punches and prods, functioning like a single foil to the singing organ and guitar lines. The album's title is no empty boast. This is the real stuff--not mere recreation--this music breathes, shouts and jumps. Doug Sahm had been recording for over 30 years by the time this album was released, reflecting the deepening wisdom and depth of one aging gracefully. This is indeed a fine album.
Album Reviews
Q (5/95, p.112) - 3 Stars - Good - "...The Last Real Texas Blues Band authentically perform songs by Spot Barrett, Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker like a human juke-box chock-full of shuffles, triplets, massed horn parts and stinging Telecaster lines." Living Blues (9-10/95, pp.67-70) - "...These guys may not be the last real Texas blues band, but they capture the swinging, timeless spirit of the region's blues tradition to a tall T."
