Before I begin this review I would just like to express that this is all my opinion. And my opinion in all its glory is quite simply this, Tool are one of the most original, inventive unique bands ever to have released an album.
The album begins with 'the Grudge' a rather upbeat, fast track that immediately grabs your attention and those dancers among you may find the tune infesting your limbs.
This is followed by an instrumental and that's one of the great things about this album. The instrumentals that appear throughout are relaxing and gentle. They make a brilliant contrast to the loud harsh almost bitter tunes. However the album has so much more to offer. Track 6, 'Parabol' is a slow, enchanting tune that is a great lead in to 'Parabola' a track that's usually received well in rock clubs. Track 10, 'Disposition' is a calming beautiful tune which I see as almost a love song. It gentle melody and sweet lyrics are completely different to those other louder tunes.
Although all members of the band are skilled and unique it is really the drummer that adds spice to this album. His drum solos are amazing and yet the other members manage to keep up.
Tool is a band that you'll either love or hate, there's no in-between. However I do suggest that you shouldn't judge them on the strength of a single song. 'Lateralus' is an album that is designed to be listened to all the way through. It is an album that exists as a whole and should be listened to as such.
To classify a band such as Tool I would list them as heavy progressive rock. They usually appeal to metal fans in particular those that like A Perfect Circle (lead singer Maynard fronts both bands), Disturbed or even early System of a Down and Audioslave.
The CD itself has a fantastic cover design. It shows a person's insides in several layers, starting at their muscles and leading to their energy, or soul. Although there are many ways to describe this as different aspects of human nature it doesn't really matter. The illustration is superb, distinctive and an echo of their controversial videos. Price however is average. To buy in the shops, Lateralus can cost around £16.99 however when found on internet sites the price can be as little as £7.99 although the usual price is a not unreasonable £11.99.
I would suggest that this is a great album to buy if you're looking to expand your music taste and try new things. Also available are 'Aenima', 'Undertow', 'Opiate' and 'Salival'.

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with you as I neither love or hate tool. Some of their stuff is alright and some of it isn't. Good review though. Donna x
