This album has been out for a while now, but thought I'd better write a review to let everyone know just how good it is!
~~~Background~~~ Shakira, the columbian international singer has been famous for a lot longer than many people realise, and has been producing album's for years in her native language of spanish.
~~~The CD~~~ This CD has it all from upbeat, "get up and dance", salsa themed songs -to emotional, powerful ballads. The CD begins with Objection (tango), a truly wonderful upbeat song with a salsa themed background. There is the well-known hit "Wherever Whenever" with the lovely sound of the holiday-themed pan flutes, and Underneath your clothes- the famous, beautiful ballad. There are many good songs including "The one", where the lyrics are truly amazing and well thought out, to "Rules" and "Ready for the good times." Nearly all of this album is about love, and the problems she experiences. Shakira sings about "The one" and that it's all she needs. She also sings about being a "fool" for loving someone she shouldn't because he's hurt her. But for those of you out there who are not soppy-don't worry! This is not a Celine Dion style album, and even though it's about love, many of the songs have attitude in them-that shows that Shakira can't be walked over.
I won't write about every song, as I may go overboard, but I will give you a brief summery
of some key songs:
~~~Objection~~~ This was released, but unfortunatly didn't get much airplay and didn't do very well. This is a very up-beat, salsa themed song, and is one of my favourites from the album. It's a really good first song and has quite a lot of attitude. Shakira sings about jelousy: "It's not her fault that she's so irresistible But all the damage she's caused isn't fixable Every twenty seconds you repeat her name But when it comes to me you don't care If I'm alive or dead" but although she is hurt, she seems more angry than upset, and channels these emotions towards him in a powerful manner.
~~~Underneath your clothes~~~ This has always been one of my favourite Shakira songs. I bought this album after hearing it when I was in Portugal a few years ago. It was released when I came back, and I thought that I have to have it. This song is written by Shakira (like all of the songs on her album) and is about her boyfriend Antonio de la Rua, who appears in the video to this song.
~~~Whenever Wherever~~~ This was Shakira's first released song in Britain, and did very well a few summers ago. I still love this song, and I think the main reasons are because of the holiday-esque sound of the pan flutes, the uber catchy melody, and the lyrics-which are quite funny-as Shakira was learning English when she wrote this. "Lucky that my lips not only mumble They spill kisses like a fountain Lucky that my breasts are small and humble So you don't confuse them with mountains Lucky I have strong legs like my mother To run for cover when I need it And these two eyes that for no other The day you leave will cry a river."
~~~Rules~~~ This is also a fast song. It's about Shakira's rules of jealousy: "you can laugh only if you laugh with me, You can cry Only if you cry for me Don't forget that you're condemned to me" In this song I think it symbolises that Shakira is not a push over. She often is quoted as saying that she won't stay at home and cook for a man, as she believes that men and women are equal. She is somewhat of a feminist (but not an extreme one!)
~~~The one~~~ I absolutely love this song. I think that it was released in Britain, but didn't get any airplay, and she was busy promoting all over the world. I think that this is my favourite from the album. It has everything a great song needs- a lovely melody, brilliant singer and good lyrics. In this song you can tell that this song really means a lot to Shakira. She wrote the lyrics, and you can almost hear her voice quiver with emotion in some lines. The guitar is brilliant in this, and when it kicks in it adds so much to the overall effect of the song that it's hard to put in to words, -you'll have to listen to it! Some good lyrics, in my opinion: "So I find a reason to shave my legs Each single morning So I count on someone on Friday nights To take me dancing again" and "So I learned to cook and finally lose My kitchen phobia And so I got the arms to cuddle in When there's a ghost or a news That brings insomnia " In this song Shakira appears a lot more vunerable, and is a complete contrast to "Objection" where she appears to have the upper hand over her man.
~~~Ready For The Good Times~~~ Again, this song is brilliant. It's another fast track. These are examples of the lyrics, I think they're brilliant: "I used to read survival guides When my world was full of seven legged cats But here I am with eight more lives"
I also like the following lyrics because again they show that Shakira's not you everyday celeb, and appreciates what she has. "I don't wanna look at fashion magazines While someone does my nails Sitting here watching other people live Frozen by the fear to fail Cause, everyday there's a war to fight And if I win or lose never mind"
~~~Fool~~~ This is another personal song to Shakira. This song is about wanting to hate a man, for hurting and upsetting her, but she just can't, and always forgives him. Shakira wants so badly to hate him but says that she's just a fool "always having my heart set on you." In this song Shakira even invites the man to :"Tell me lies,slap me on the face,just improvise". In other words please to anything to make me hate you!
~~~Te Dejo Madrid~~~ This song is in Spanish, and was released in spain. This is a very catchy song, and has a nice guitar through out the song.
I also like the way Shakira has included some songs in Spanish, including the spanish version of "Whenever Wherever " (Suerte) which is really good, but rather hard to sing along to!
~~~Is it any good?~~~ I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who even slightly likes Shakira, because after listening to this I swear you will be converts and a huge Shakira fan! In this album Shakira manages to combine talent, great hits, and a big voice (and hair) to create a great album- suitable for any mood, male or female, and all ages.
