Admittedly Leaving Through The Window begins to slope downwards after these tracks, but fans of Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World will not be disappointed. Well worth the money if your into this kind of music. I'm normally more inclined towards the heavier genres, but found this a great listen, and it's been in and out of my cd player since I got it. Good stuff.
It has to be said the Something Corporate aren't exactly a house hold name. Ask most music fans who they were and you'd be met with a mixture of clueless 'Who?'s and a lot of shrugs. However, with this album I certainly feel they should be sitting atop the American Punk-Pop ladder along with similar bands.
The thing that sets this album apart from similarly styled records is primarily the lyrics. In many places they are incredibly impressive, and well thought out. The songs are not just on the usual 'can't stop thinking about this girl' theme that everyone has seemed to adopt nowadays, but circulate around several themes.
The album opens with 'I Want To Save You' (admittedly not the most inspiring of titles) but nevertheless a good song with a catchy chorus. 'Punk Rock Princess' is better known, released as a single by the group, but personally I feel it borders on the realms of Busted and McFly in some places. However 'I Woke Up In a Car' is much better, with a great chorus and altogether a fantastic song.
The record continues through other impressive tracks such as 'If You C Jordan', 'Hurricane' and 'Cavanaugh Park' before reaching my personal two highlights of the album.
Track numbers 8 and 9 I think are great. 'Fall' is a simple enough song, with an easy chord progression and simple drumming. The vocals are great though, and the whole track works really well as a whole. It's amazing the way simple songs always manage to make the best sound! Track 9 'Straw Dog' is also great, containing some of the best lyrics on the album, combined with some great piano (which can be heard throughout the whole record).
Good stuff.
Advantages: Very easy to listen to Disadvantages: Sounds VERY different to previous albums
I had already bought SomethingCorporate's (or SoCo as they're more affectionately known) previous album LeavingThrough The Window and loved it. I felt their music was unlike alot of other Emo/Pop stuff. Track 6 on LeavingThrough The Window, 'Hurricane' had a fantastic sound resulting from a mix of drums & guitars along with piano. Yet at the same time, Track 4 'iF U C Jordan' had a distinct cheeky High School feel to it which made me laugh. As a result, i became a fan of SomethingCorporate and bought North without hesitation when it was released.
North sounds extremely different to SoCo's previous work. Listening to it, you can tell the 5 male members have grown up from the Californian kids they were. It is much more mature sounding but not neccessarily a bad thing. I must admit, one track on North bored the hell out of me ...

Album Notes
Something Corporate includes: Andrew McMahon (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Josh Partington, William Tell (guitar, background vocals); Clutch (bass, background vocals); Brian Ireland (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Paul Buckmaster (arranger, conductor). Engineers include: Jim Wirt, Mike Fraser, Brian Reeves. Recorded at Cello, Hollywood, California; 4th Street, Santa Monica, California; South Beach, Miami, Florida; Jungle Room Studio, Glendale, California. At heart, Something Corporate find themselves somewhere between the quirky, piano-driven sound of Ben Folds Five and the power pop angst of Marvelous 3 and Semisonic. The bittersweet mid-tempo "Cavanaugh Park" boasts lush, dramatic keyboards, setting a vibe that is almost at odds with the lyrics. "Punk Rock Princess" is as catchy as the song's name would suggest, while the bratty, self-proclaimed anthem "If You C Jordan" sounds like a second cousin to much contemporaneous neo-pop-punk music. Staying corporate, "Drunk Girl" opens with Boston-influenced guitar harmonies that lead to the most endearing sentiment on LEAVING THROUGH THE WINDOW. The song finds a man in a dubious situation, but virtue keeps him from betraying his heart; not something corporate, but something refreshing.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (10/3/02, p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...They craft suburban ennui and high-school angst into slick, hummable punk...the secret weapon here is sharp songwriting and nice keyboards...Derivative, but not boring." Entertainment Weekly (5/31/02, p.108) - "...Though these guys have the same catchy choruses and jump-up-and-down energy of modern-rock counterparts like Sum 41 and Blink-182, they're not nearly as juvenile..." - Rating: B
