performances that were ever filmed during the band's extraordinary lifetime. As guitarist Jimmy Page explains "We were never really part of the pop scene. It was never what Led Zeppelin was supposed to be about. Our thing was playing live. In that sense Zeppelin was very much an underground band. The fact that it became as successful as it did was something that was almost out of our control. We actually shunned commercialism which is why so little official footage of the band has ever been seen before." Featured are performances from the Royal Albert Hall in January 1970 just one year after the release of their debut album their triumphant five-night run at Earl's Court in May 1975 and their record-breaking shows at the Knebworth Festival in August 1979 just one year before the death of drummer John Bonham led to the band's dissolution. Also included are songs from New York's Madison Square Garden in July 1973 which were not included in 'The Song Remains The Same' concert film the only previously released live Zeppelin footage. Other highlights of the release include extremely rare television appearances including a performance for Danish television in March 1969 promotional clips TV interviews behind-the-scenes material and even a bit of fan-shot "bootleg" footage. A stunning sound and vision experience Led Zeppelin DVD has been painstakingly restored remixed and remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround DTS and PCM Two-Channel Stereo - under the personal supervision of Jimmy Page and director Dick Carruthers. There are many "gems" to be found on Box Set 2 and it's musical diversity is a joy to listen to. On tracks such as "The Lemon Song" and "You Shook Me" the band's blues roots are on display and later, country influences are very much in evidence on "Hot Dog" and "Darlene", whilst tracks such as "Night Flight", "The Rover", "Four Sticks" and "How Many More Times" are rock masterpieces. The brooding precsence of "Carouselambra" is an often an overlooked masterpiece from the Zeppelin cannon. The packaging includes a booklet of rare photos and info. This is the second box set released of the Led Zeppelin back catalogue, having been remastered by Jimmy Page, and as such is basically the material that was omitted from the prior four cd box set. The first box set includes most of the band's best known material and as such for someone new to Led Zeppelin or anyone simply wishing to own a definitive part of their works, this would be, in my opinion the best place to start, but that said, if you want to complete the picture of one the greatest bands of all time then this really is an esential purchase and a great addition to any record collection.
Album Notes: Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric 6 & 12-string guitars, mandolin, background vocals), John Paul Jones (Fender bass, Mellotron, keyboards, background vocals), John Bonham (drums, percussion). Engineers include: Glyn Johns, Vic Maille, Andy Johns. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Digitally remastered by Jimmy Page and George Marino at Sterling Sound. Contains 31 tracks from Led Zeppelin's nine studio albums not included on the original Zeppelin box set. Includes one previously unreleased track and a 48-page booklet featuring photographs, and complete credits. This pivotal quartet was formed in October 1968 by Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and John Bonham. On Led Zeppelin, Page's staggering dexterity was matched by Plant's expressive, beseeching voice, a combination that flourished on Led Zeppelin II. A greater subtlety was emphasized on Led Zeppelin III, and Led Zeppelin IV included the anthemic 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Black Dog' and 'Rock 'N' Roll'. However, the effusive praise was more muted for Houses Of The Holy. A concurrent US tour helped to finance an in-concert film, issued in 1976 as The Song Remains The Same. Physical Graffiti, a double set, gave full rein to the quartet's diverse interests. Advance orders alone assured Presence platinum status. Although lacking the definition of earlier work, In Through The Out Door was a strong collection on which John Paul Jones emerged as the unifying factor. Rehearsals were then undertaken for another US tour, but in September 1980, Bonham was found dead. On 4 December, Swansong announced that the group had officially retired, although a collection of archive material, Coda, was subsequently issued. Led Zeppelin are now rightly recognized as one of the most influential bands of the rock era.
Album Reviews: Q (11/93, p.146) - 3 Stars - Good - "...there is some excellent material [on BOXED SET 2], and Jimmy Page and George Marino have made a sterling job of the remastering..." Melody Maker (10/23/93, p.36) - "...even these shavings [from BOXED SET 2] are improbably bold, brutal and startling. Like being touched up by a gnu..."
