This is the seminal second album from Hard Rock's most overstated majesties.
It kicks of with the stomping "Whole Lotta Love," a 5 minute wonder, featuring all sorts of production techniques way ahead of the times. Next we have the wonderful bluesy/folky/jazzy "What Is And What Should Never Be," with it's very smooth after dinner jazz type verse, then a hard chorus. Were even privileged enough to get a slide solo from Jimmy Page himself!
Track 3 is the rawcus "The Lemon Song." It has a heavy blues feel going on all the way, along with hard drums, strong bass, suggestive vocals, then i turns to a skiffle type of riff ( Borrowed from Howlin' Dog's "Killing Floor"). "Thank You" Is a masterpiece of gentle folk tied in with Led Zep's typical transferance to the opposite extreme. A good chorus, but not too overstated.
Next, is my personal favourite song of all time, The amazing "Heartbreaker". This starts as it means to go on, and we even get a big Jim Page solo in the middle. Granted, live versions of this song are often better, but this one is still worth a listen. This is immediately followed by "Livin Lovin Maid" a little known Led Zep song, but not a bad one. The popularity was never gained, as they never played it live, which is a shame.
"Ramble On" comes next, which is a very folky song, but with a heavy chorus and build up. This song has strong lyrical references to the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The John Bonham masterpeice comes next in "Moby Dick" An excellent riff, with an amazing drum solo.
The last song "Bring It On Home," does exactly what it says on the tin. A stomping blues song, that draws the album to a scorching climax of a finish.
