Led Zeppelin's 4th album (so entitled, lest we forget), is a curious mix of folk, rock and excellent blues instrumentals. With an element of Mick Jagger to them, Robert Plant's vocals on tracks such as Stairway To Heaven really take the top spot on this short album, although the whole presentation is brilliant.
The Battle Of Evermore is a foot-tapping ye olde age track, with plenty of instrumentals to it that take you back centuries, while tracks such as When The Levee Breaks really delve strongly into the bluesy nature of Zep.
The album really does show a highly versatile side to the group, and with only 8 tracks to do this in, it really does show just how talented and astute these guys were in their heyday. The vocals and instrumental sounds click on nearly every track, and I found the whole thing easy to listen to, no matter the genre that was being explored at the time.
The underlying feel of the album, though, is perhaps summed up in Misty Mountain Hop, which gives us a very folky sound that is just easy going and fun loving, despite its lyrics of love. Plant's additional harmonica sounds really add to the feel of the piece, and with only the 8 tracks, you have to feel that this was an album made for them, by them, and with a lot of them in it. This is perhaps the biggest appeal of the album, the fact that they didn't try to force more songs into it. The temptation to throw a couple of unrefined tunes into the mix must have been quite a strong one, but in giving us the 8, we have a strong mix of folk, blues, and of course rock, with not a weak note in sight.
IV is a fantastic album that I am hooked on having listened to it only once. How I have not caught it before I do not know. It's brilliant. It's currently available from amazon.co.uk for £5.58, and is one to have on your shelf.
