Legend (Original Soundtrack From Robin Of Sherwood/Remastered & Repackaged) - Clannad

Advantages: a very evocative, beautiful, sound track

...In the early eighties there was a TV adaptation of the Robin Hood story. Robin of Sherwood was a classic of its era and has stood the test of time well. It was also responsible for aiding the careers of a number of actors who were to begome household names. Michael Praed played the lead, to be replaced by Jason Connery when the former moved to Dynasty and then into relative obscurity. Clive Mantle, Nicholas Grace, Richard Addie and Ray Winstone were also along for the ride. This version of the story was a down beat, grubby re-telling of the story mixed with mysticism and superstition, but ultimately a realistic version of the myth. Advantages: If you are new to Irish Folk music then this is the one for you!
Disadvantages: If you already have some of Clannad's other work you may already have most of this compilation.

.... They released their self-titled first album in 1973, yet the band didn't earn any widespread success until they toured Germany in 1975. Maire's sister, Enya, joined the group in 1979, yet left in 1982, just as the group was beginning to come into some pop success in the U.K. Clannad recorded the theme song for the television program Harry's Game; the single hit number five on the charts and won the band an Ivor Novello Award. The band recorded the soundtrack to the television production Robin of Sherwood in 1984; it won a British Academy Award for best soundtrack the next year. Clannad's success continued in 1986, when U2's Bono was featured on the Top 20 hit "In a Lifetime." Advantages: a crossover of traditional and modern
Disadvantages: seen as a sell out by folk purists

...Clannads music has its roots in the traditional sound of Irish folk, but even from the early days of the band there was obviously more going on in their music that met the eye. After over a decade of touring and releasing beautiful but only moderatly successful album, the mid eighties saw Clannad take wing and soar into a different league. Ironically it was their work on soundtracks that really got them noticed, first the Theme from Harrys Game and then 1984s Legend the sound track to the Robin of Sherwood TV series. After this they were in a different league and maybe that explains some of the reasons behind the change of direction that resulted in their biggest and most successful album to date, Macalla.
