Those of you who frequent my opinions on certain matters could not have missed the fact that I am a devoted dad! No seriously I am!
Today I had a father son bonding session with my oldest – affectionately known as TJ or Teej, I was able to palm off the youngest (Sam (with Alistair his teddy)) to a friend for the day. this involved getting our hair done and some serious retail therepy - including CD buying...
I’m getting back into the social circuit – this has revived my music sense massively :o) all I’ve listened to recently was purely old music (80’s, House and dance) I have a huge selection of music though. Recently though I’ve been adding to it Scissor Sisters, Snow patrol etc and today I bought Marilyn Manson’s Best of album (Lest we forget).
Teej was horrified when I beat him at paper scissor rock (this is the democratic way of deciding who gets to play their CD of the day in the car (god help us when Sam wins! I hate listening to “I’m a flippy floppy scarecrow in a flippy floppy hat”)). Today I won the obligatory 3 rounds of PSR “Rock always wins!”
So, gloating over my son’s loss I removed the CD from the case still in the bag so he couldn’t see what I bought…
Seat belts on – check, check Sun glasses on – check, check Windows down – check Volume on loud – Check Grumpy kid to my left expecting to listen to crap – Check.
CD on – turn straight to Track 2
“REACH OUT AND TOUCH ME…” There is a little bit of boy/girl racer in all of us… he he he
A few moments later and TJ looks at me and explains that I’m too old to listen to this…
MM – Lest We forget This is quite a hard rock album; I got the special edition version and cost me £11.99 for 19 tracks. It is also a parental advisory album – meaning it has explicit language. It has too!
The style of the majority of the music is aimed at the Skater fraternity, but for me this does not detract anything. It also has 3 (in my humble opinion) very good covers from the 80’s & 90’s these being: - Depeche Mode’s “personal Jesus” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” & Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams (are made of this). I loved all three versions of these, some of my fave records- so I’m possibly not all that cool – but Teej doesn’t know that! ;op
On this album the group consists of: - Marilyn Manson – Vocals Tim Skold – Guitars & Bass Madonna Wayne Gacy – Keyboards (and possibly bullied at school!) Ginger Fish - Drums
“So, what are these 19 tracks?” I hear you ask. No? I’m sure I heard you ask!
1. the love song slow to start, but with a heavy beat – before getting into some heavy grunge sound, quite heavy. :o¦
2. personal jesus As good as the original but with an awesome heavy beat to it – I think I prefer this to the original (sacrilege I know!) :o)
3. mOBSCENE quite fast – sort of music you’d hear on Jackass or some similar programme… :o)
4. the fight song heavy again, as will most of the album be, but this has it’s roots in death metal, really hard and head pounding!! :o)
5. tainted love grungy, heavy version of the original – again I like this cover – but isn’t as good as the original… :o) :o)
6. the dope show slow, with a heavy riff, it’s just about drugs… :o¦
7. this is the new shit bit weird, goes from like an 80’s electric pop type sound to grunge… I like it but it’s odd! :o)
8. disposable teens sounds like something Nirvana would have made if they were REALLY angry, with some very unique lyrics – I’m a black rainbow! :o)
9. sweet dreams (are made of this) Very good version of the original – slow, heavy but true to the original – I like this one – not as much as the Eurythmics, but its cool :o)
10. lunchbox sounds a bit dated, but has poignant lyrics about school bullies, but also has references to guns etc… also has snatches of lyrics from other groups (wont spoil the surprise though) :o(
11. tourniquet I like this track as it reminds me of the Pixies – this is influenced from this group and Manson makes it work :o)
12. rock is dead Dated sound sounds early 90’s is heavy fast and a bit too retro. :o(
13. get your gunn This is one which is influenced by Metallica – from the drum beat to Manson’s style of singing in this – you can mix it quite easily with Enter Sandman :o¦
14. the nobodies Slow catchy tune, gets nice and heavy great lyrics – fantastic tune to stop at the traffic lights (windows down sun glasses on and rocking your head in time to the moosic!) :o) :o)
15. long hard road out of hell slow grungy, bit of a “sisters of mercy” to this track – but looses the track ½ way through not in to this one :o¦
16. the beautiful people OO Far to heavy, bit like death metal, slows down in places then speeds up again – not my bag baby! :o(
17. the reflecting god Ever heard of a group called Biohazard/ no? well this track sounds like them – I like it but not much – I have a Biohazard CD and there are some decent tracks on it – but not many.
18. (s)AINT another catchy track – not too heavy, not too slow – good lyrics and nice to drive too – on a motorway (obviously observing all speed limits) :o)
19. irresponsible hate anthem This is a live track, and is very fast, heavy – again death metal springs to mind, not a favourite – but then again as TJ keeps reminding me I’m old!

Debauched Mode Review ofLest We Forget (The Best Of Marilyn Manson) [PA] - Marilyn Mansonby
mark_allen71
Advantages: Glammed up, soul gone, gothed out Disadvantages: Songs are like a dead atheist
...What we get with Lest We Forget is a fixation with British synth-pop and an obsession with upsetting Middle America, admirable, but not something to build a career on.
The highlights are the cover versions (never a good sign) with Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), and the recent Satanised glam of Personal Jesus.
He manages to drag these down to the gothic depths with sub Limp Bizkit-esque riffs replacing the poppiness and his trademark ... ...getting bigger by the night, Marilyn might as well crawl back into his coffin and shut the lid until the Rocky Horror Show needs a new narrator. These songs are like an athiest in a coffin...all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Advantages: Briliant,Inspiring,Truely the one of the best albums yet. Disadvantages: None that i can think of.
Lest We Forget or The Best Of was released in 2003 and it was my first Marilyn Manson album I ever purchased and by then on it's has to be one of my favourite albums that Marilyn Manson has so far done.
It includes such tracks as Personal Jesus, mOBSCENE, The Fight Song, Tainted love, Disposable teens and The Nobodies. There are another 11 tracks as well as these and those you who may purchase the Special Edition album there is also another two ... ...The albums title, Lest We Forget The Best Of, truly does contain Manson's Best tracks which is why I enjoy it so much and I hope any of you who have purchased this album or may purchase this album do agree. And do find this to be Manson Greatest hits. ...

Gotta Love It Review ofLest We Forget (The Best Of Marilyn Manson) [PA] - Marilyn Mansonby
Black_Shadow
Advantages: Fantastic Album Disadvantages: None
I have liked Marilyn Manson for a long time but there have always only ever been half (at most) the songs on each album that I like. This album however does not contain a single track that I dont like. You can feel the base in songs like Mobscene or you can tone down slightly with his renditions of Tanited Love and Sweet Dreams (which I have to say is my favorite track on the album). If you have never listened to Marilyn Manson before but are interested ... ...include some of the more disturbing tracks he has done) then I would recommend that you buy this album. If you are someone who owns all of his albums already then this is probably not going to be one you will buy as there is nothing new on this album. ...

Opinions on Lest we forget. Review ofLest We Forget (The Best Of Marilyn Manson) [PA] - Marilyn Mansonby
amistarr
Advantages: a great mix of his best songs, great lyrics and cover art Disadvantages: only one new song.
This is one of my favorite of his CDs because it is pretty much a mix of all his best songs, with a new song "personal jesus" (which is a remake, along with a few others on the CD). I believe It is one of his best in my opinion, since most of the songs on it hit number one on the charts. I also love the cover od the CD. He painted it himself using water colors and also some Absinthe. I prefer this CD rather than the last mix CD he did called "holywood" ...

Additional notes
Album Notes: U.K. edition adds two extra songs. There couldn't be a more fitting title for this collection of gruesome grooves by modern rock's most paradoxical artist; it implies the cataclysm of a national tragedy, and still completely understates the impact this band has had in shaping the face of popular music. How could anyone forget the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" and his macabre circus. Once a Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) protege, the visually intense Marilyn Manson quickly eclipsed his mentor with releases that peered beneath the facade of American life, revealing a seedy, grotesque, and often disturbing reality. Considering that Marilyn Manson never pandered to the Top 40 set, LEST WE FORGET can't rightfully be dubbed a greatest-hits record; it serves more as a reminder of the man and his group's 10-year blitz of ghoulish, gory, industrial rock. Manson was always a fan of satire, and covers of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Tainted Love" offer sinister results. The 2004 collection also features a spooky new take on Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," as well as an array of dark favorites culled from each release by the man himself, including "The Dope Show," "Tourniquet," and "The Beautiful People." Take one look at the disc's photos (or the uber-graphic bonus DVD available on some versions) and have Marilyn Manson burned in your mind forever.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.113) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "Manson's mix of fetish, goth, hedonism and metal still jells on these tracks and others." Spin (p.109) - "[I]t's Manson's malleability that makes him so universally useful....Awesome..." - Grade: B+ Entertainment Weekly (p.120) - "[T]he eviscerating early hits remain freshly unsettling..." Uncut (p.162) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's his own fantasias that show his truly subversive side..."
