Make-up mannequin and self-styled “God Of F**k” Marilyn Manson may be massive in America but is he really more than a well-marketed karaoke artist?
I was prepared to give him the benefit of my considerable doubt and bought his best of compilation in the hope of being converted, or at least getting a glimpse of the dark.
What we get with Lest We Forget is a fixation with British synth-pop and an obsession with upsetting Middle America, admirable, but not something to build a career on.
The highlights are the cover versions (never a good sign) with Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), and the recent Satanised glam of Personal Jesus.
He manages to drag these down to the gothic depths with sub Limp Bizkit-esque riffs replacing the poppiness and his trademark growling away the tunes.
This kind of works, when there is a good tune to gnaw at in the first place, but tracks like Disposable Teens and Lunchbox just don’t….If its not alive you can’t kill it!
Mobscene works because there is something you can hum in there somewhere on your way to the graveyard or getting your hair dyed even blacker.
The other high point for me is Rock Is Dead, because of its glam. I could have been listening to Slade for a moment, then I realised Mr Mansun dresses more conservatively.
Unfortunately this second most famous singer with the initials M and M seems to have had his finest hour and, with new Goths on the block, HIM, The Rasmus getting bigger by the night, Marilyn might as well crawl back into his coffin and shut the lid until the Rocky Horror Show needs a new narrator.
These songs are like an athiest in a coffin...all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Lest We Forget Marilyn who?
