Avril Lavigne, many may not have heard of this artist until quite recently. In the mid part of the 90’s female artists of the similar genre made their mark, people like Sheryl Crow, Natalie Imbruglia, Meredeth Brooks made huge impressions with groundbreaking tracks such as “If it makes you happy” “Torn” and “Bitch”.
To look at Avril you may thinks she’s just another Britney or Christina, she certainly has the looks, and the trademark blonde hair, and certainly has a lot more talent. But looking at here clothing, she certainly has her own view on fashion, she’s obviously not another manufactured pretty girl with no personality.
But surely in a genre, which can generally be described as Adult Contemporary, can there be any more to be achieved in this area?
The young artist, 18,has been wowing people since she was at the very tender age of two, and it could be seen then that a huge talent would emerge, and did, at the age of 16 she signed her first record deal with Arista records. That’s fine but for one thing, she had her own ideas about what she wanted to do. Good thing Antonio Reid of Arista had just had similar battles with another maverick in the form of Pink. Otherwise the youngsters’ career as an artist could have been a non-starter.
So finally the feisty Canadian who’s music isn’t much of a far cry from her fellow countrywoman Alanis Morrisette, so there may be some similarities between the two, yes, as it seems the skating princess seems to take the best from
all other women in the genre and turn it into her own.
Poppy hooks, sensational musical backing, personal lyrics and sensibility all of which can be seen in the works of the aforementioned artists. With all this in toe, Lavigne creates a masterpiece of musical genius that fills all the gaps between the manufactured pop world, lyrically astounding artists in various genres and the punky pop style, which has been seen so much recently.
So this brings me to the album itself: An inlay, not uncommon from similar artists, a colour picture of Lavigne dressed almost all in black, arms crossed with a blur of a street scene in the background. The Lettering is sketchy and white and reads, Aril Lavigne. Let Go.
Inside, the CD itself is black with the name and title of the album and artist in red lettering, along with a red star on top of a greyscale picture of whom we can only assume is Miss Lavigne.
The inlay shows, various poses of Avril with the lyrics of the songs printed around them. Unremarkable and doesn’t give fair representation to the fantastic displays of talent about to be heard by the buyer of this album!
Track 1: Losing Grip 3:53 A cracking track, this really shows off her talent, you can see how well she takes on the strong parts of the song, not overly aggressive however, she also gets right to some of the higher points, sometimes sounding scarily like the Celtic lady known as Enya.
Track 2: Complicated 4:05 Quite a cheery and uplifting track, here she definitely shows her lyrical talents singing superbly catchy hooks that are easy on the ear. A little more of a poppy track and released for obvious reasons. Great.
Track 3 Sk8er Boi 3:23 A wonderful story song of how she gets the boy in the end, about prejudice towards the skating kids, it has a great rock sort of rhythm along with brilliant lyrics, something you can really sing along to, this has also been released as a single.
Track 4 I’m With You 3:44 A token slow song, a little bit sappier, but she does show her more mature side in this track, a more contemplatory outlook on life, again towards the end hints of Enya and Alanis creep in. It builds up to a more pronounced song at the end, but generally a nice slow one.
Track 5 Mobile 3:31 “Everything is changing, when I turn around, all out of my control, I’m a mobile.” Very catchy, looks at herself as, a mobile! Very powerful, a good musical backing.
Track 6 Unwanted 3:40 Great backing again, good rock that makes you want to dance around your room, if you’re into that thing! Again profound lyrics, she reaches blissful lows of melancholy that erupt into lyrical anger. Wonderful
Track 7 Tomorrow 3:48 Another slow starter, but in the rhythmic sense of the word. “Hey yady ya hey yady ya” What more can I say? A song on par with all the others, again great lyrics, alas not my favourite, not a bad song either though! A song to drift you of to sleep?
Track 8 Anything But Ordinary 4:12 Of course who wants to be ordinary. Here we see a sneak peak into Avrils personality, she’s a bit of a risk taker. Lyrically again this track is very profound, a mellow verse leading up to a more powerful chorus, of which talent shines through, hints again of other similar artists. One you can really relate to I think!
Track 9 Things I’ll Never Say 3:44 For me this was the song that when I first heard it you thought, I’ve heard this before, but strangely we haven’t, a lovely musical accompaniment to very catchy lyrics. Also there is a hint of naughtiness, “Ill say I wanna blow you….. away” “Ill say I want you to go down, on me!” Shocking, fits well though! A great track.
Track 10 My World 3:27 Shows here how she grew up, a hint of childishness vulnerability but a more adult pace, the lyrics again great, very catchy, will possibly take you yourself back to your childhood. A look, not surprisingly into her world! A firm favourite of mine, she’s also telling us she’s not just a dumb blonde!
Track 11 Nobody’s Fool 3:57 Miss Lavigne tries her hand at a bit of rap, not cheesy, well done, and only really lasts in a bit of a verse. The chorus is powerful again, showing us her Girl Power! “Not Nobodys Fool” apparently. Another firm favourite.
Track 12 Too Much To Ask 3:46 Another melancholy track, also one that we can relate to, a build to a great powerful chorus, which mellows off, showing her girly flare right at the end. Another masterpiece in the form of musical backing too, good work!
Track 13 Naked 3:27 A ballad, tries at least, not the best but still has her great voice, with some good lyrics. The chorus is more than average but not great, the short guitar solos are a good release. A fair track nonetheless, may appeal to the romantics a bit maybe?
So if this is not a great album I don’t know what is, most of the songs, as you would expect are about boyfriends and things of that sort of nature, aww. But with 13 tracks did she really write about 13 different guys? Apparently not, she states its generally about 3 songs per guy! Many of the songs need a good chance to shine, so listen few times before you dismiss them they are sure to grow on you. The released songs are indeed a good indication of the overall album, like em and your sure to like this.
The album is available for around £9.99 at most good record stores, Virgin, HMV, Woolworth’s, MVC. Enjoy!
