Avril may seem moody in interviews but once you hear this album, you will forget all about it. But Avril is a very honest person who does not care what other people think about her.
This album certainly shows Avril’s talents of a songwriter and singer. She can be up there with other talented songwriters and singers such as Shania Twain, Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch etc. (I named all the female artists I like actual who I think is talented with their voice and writing).
Once you buy this album, you will realise why she is becoming a very successful artist toping the charts in every country with her catchy and original songs. This album is varied with different vocal mediums and sounds so this will cater for all people with different musical tastes.
The CD is enhanced for the computer, so you will be able to read here bio, hear 4 tracks with lyrics along with it which are present in the album and hear a bonus track which is unable to play on a normal CD player.
Here are my opinions of each song on the album. The only way I can describe the songs are comparing with other artists I the charts at the moment, so bear with me and my references of artists. I will also name my favourite lyric in the song after each opinion!
1.Losing grip This very much like Linkin Parks music
with the sampling and guitars. This starts off with a mellow tune then transforms in to a heavy metal chorus. Avril’s voice varies here, she has a sweet pop voice along with an Alanis Morrisette voice in points. “You weren’t there, when I was scared, I was so alone”
2.Complicated This is the debut single from Avril, which became very successful and a well-known tune all over the world. Avril has a pop sound here with a very strong voice. I think I would class this song like Wheatus, with the gentle guitars and catchy song which will make you want to sing along every time. “If you could only let it be, you will see”
3.Sk8er Boi This is the second single released from the album, again this entered the top 10 of the UK charts and stayed there for a weeks. This may not sound as catchy as Complicated at first, but it will grow on you because it is a brilliant song that is very memorable. I cannot compare this to any other artists, this is original and unique with a very rocky edge. “”He was a sk8er boi she said see you later boi, he wasn’t good enough for her”
4.I’m with you This is a slow ballad with a rock feel to it. This is the third single to be released from this album. This is my favourite song throughout the album. It can be melodramatic song, but great Karaoke material where everyone can sing it and catchy. Avril’s voice is very soft and gentle in this song, but when it picks up speed and tempo, here voice becomes more like a rock singer with a very strong voice. “Cause nothings going right, and everything’s a mess, and no one wants to be alone.”
5.Mobile This is a song of being fed up of having to leave all the time and leave her life behind her. This is a very pop like song, but this has not made much of an impact on me because it is not as catchy as the songs she has released. “Everything’s changing everywhere I go, all out of my control”
6.Unwanted This has sounds of Linkin Park, The Calling and tunes sounding like Vanessa Carlton’s songs. This is a very unique song because it has a feel of a Latino vibe but not quite because it has a brilliant rock feel to it too. “You don’t know me, don’t ignore me”
7.Tomorrow This is one of those songs that can be played on the show Dawson Creek, with a very summery feel and great for teenagers. This is definitely a chill out song with unique songwriting, which is like Michelle Branch. “”When you say that it’s gonna be, it always turns out to be a different way”
8.Anything but ordinary This is another chill out song because it more toned down in rock than the other songs on the album. This has an indie feel to with Avril’s tranquil voice. The chorus is very catchy and I think this song has potential to be released as a single. “Is it enough to love, is enough to breath”
9.Things I’ll never say A bit of yodelling, which is very effective and makes the song unique (not properly yodelling but a use of voice which is up and down the scale, if you know what I mean!) This is a brilliant pop song. “If I could say what I want to say, I’d say I want to blow you …..away”
10.My world Avril sounds like Natalie Imbruglia here (I hope I spelt her name right!), and the tune sounds like one of Natalie’s songs, with a pop feel to with a unique chorus. “I can help if I space in daze, my eyes tune out the other way”
11.Nobody’s fool When Avril says step up in this song, it sounds like Justin Timberlake! Avril raps in this song and then sings with a yodelling voice in the chorus, she again sounds like Alanis Morrisette when singing the chorus, and sounds like Bloodhound gang when rapping. “I’ve en enough and I’m over that, I’m nobody’s fool”
12.Too much to ask Avril’s ballads are not that slow because it is more upbeat with feeling, which is what this song is. It is not that original and it feels like a drag to hear this song. Although she does has a strong voice in this song. “It’s the first time I’ve ever felt this lonely”
13.Naked Avril’s voice is brilliantly used in this song, I believe is the best song vocally for Avril in this album. This is an upbeat ballad with emotions showing the performance. Brilliant use of guitars too give it a Linkin Park sound. “This life is a game sometimes”
The album includes lyrics for every single song so you could follow or sing along with the album, also it is full of brilliant pictures of Avril! So this album is amazingly good for Avril fans.

This album is a true work of art, much better than any of the tedious/boring relentless manufactured music streaming in from the states such as Britney Spears etc, N-SYNC, etc. I think my fav track on the album is either 'things i'll never say' or 'my world'. A great review of a great album Cheung. A well written and informatitive op. Jimmy:)
