I got Avril Lavigne’s album, titled Let Go, for my birthday last year. I didn’t think I’d like it that much as I am more into rap and hip hop music and Avril’s punk rock ‘n’ roll style didn’t appeal to me. After listening to the album my opinion on Avril soon changed, her music is really good despite her moody 17 year old punk star appearance. Avril also has four other band mates Jesse, Matt, Evan and Mark, her ‘posse’.
You can buy Avril’s album at most high street music stores for about £12.99 or more. Or if you’re one of those online shopaholics you could probably buy the album from somewhere like www.cdwow.com for around £8.99. I’ve also just been told by jo (gloricifus) that you can get it from Tesco at £8.66.
Now I’ll try to talk about each of Avril’s songs on the album and give you a taste of some of the lyrics from each song…
*~ 1. Losing Grip (3:53) ~*
Losing grip is the next single that Avril will be releasing off her album. I really like this song as you can sing along to it and it’s a mixture of punk and pop brought together. The song is about a girl who is with a boy who doesn’t seem that interested in her anymore and doesn’t take notice of her. The way it has been written makes it seems like a letter from the girl to the boy telling him how she feels. My rating… 9/10
“Are you aware of what you make me feel, baby Right now I feel invisible to you, like I'm not real Didn't you feel me lock my arms around you Why'd you turn away? Here's what I have to say I was left to cry there, waiting outside there grinning with a lost stare That's when I decided…”
*~ 2. Complicated (4.05) ~*
This was Avril’s debut single and one of my favourite songs off the album. Complicated is about a girl and her boyfriend who has tried to change his image and is acting totally different from himself. The girl is trying to tell him in the song that he isn’t fooling anyone else with his new image and he looks like a fool! Complicated is one of those songs that
makes you want to dance about and sing along into your hairbrush and everyone knows the lyrics to. My rating… 8/10
“Why you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you're acting like you're somebody else gets me frustrated, Life's like this you, And you fall and you crawl and you break, and you take what you get and you turn it into honesty, and promise me I'm never gonna find you fake it, no no no…”
*~ 3. Sk8er Boi (3:23) ~*
This is a song, which Avril is most famous for, her second single off the album and in the end of her video she smashes up her guitar! You believe how ‘rock’ she is now?! Sk8er boi is about a girl who secretly likes a boy at school, but she doesn’t get together with him because she thinks what her friends think about him is more important. It really makes you want to jump up and down and sing along into your hairbrush and it’s written from the perspective as the story being told years later on. I really like this song. My rating… 10/10
“He was a skater boy She said see you later boy He wasn't good enough for her She had a pretty face But her head was up in space She needed to come back down to earth.”
*~ 4. I’m With You (3:44) ~*
Quite a slow song and Avril’s third released single off the album, it’s not really one of my favourites but it’s still a good song. I’m with you is about a girl who feels alone and insecure, she needs someone who will listen to her problems and get her out of her confusion. My rating… 5/10
“Isn't anyone trying to find me? Won't somebody come take me home It's a damn cold night Trying to figure out this life Wont you take me by the hand Take me somewhere new I don't know who you are But I... I'm with you I'm with you.”
*~ 5. Mobile (3:31) ~*
I don’t think Mobile is one of the best songs off the album, well it isn’t one of my favourites. It’s a bit acoustic at the beginning and it’s about Avril’s life and how she’s changing so much, like in her career and she’s travelling so much around the world and she doesn’t get chance to settle in before she’s off again. I wouldn’t mind being able to go the places you do Avril! My rating… 4/10
“Went back home again this sucks gotta pack up and leave again say goodbye to all my friends can't say when I'll be there again It's time now to turn around Turn my back on EVERYTHING (turn my back on) everything....”
*~ 6. Unwanted (3:40) ~*
Unwanted is about rejection and someone trying to fit in with the crowd but no matter how hard you try to you always get turned away and people will talk about you behind your back. This is played with a much heavier guitar compared to mobile and I think it is a much better song compared to that. My rating… 6/10
*~ 7. Tomorrow (3:48) ~*
Tommorow is quite a slow song with guitar in the background and you can really sing along to this one. It’s about making someone making a big decision and not knowing what to decide then because the next day may seem totally different and be a different day in their perspective. My rating… 6/10
”I don't know how I'll feel, tomorrow, tomorrow, I don't know what to say, tomorrow, tomorrow Is a different day.”
*~ 8. Anything But Ordinary (4:12) ~*
This is one of my favourite tracks off the album as it’s another sort of song that you’ll find me listening to in my room and dancing about the place singing into my hair brush, ‘cos I’m a bit mad like that and this song reminds me of myself, lol. It’s about someone who likes to be different from everybody else in their own little way and wonders about the world and things that go on in it. My rating… 10/10.
“Sometimes I get so weird I even freak myself out I laugh myself to sleep It's my lullaby Sometimes I drive so fast Just to feel the danger I wanna scream It makes me feel alive.”
*~ 9. Things I’ll Never Say (3:44) ~*
Things I’ll never say is an upbeat song, with the guitar in the background as well as the electric guitar. This song is about a girl trying to be totally perfect for her guy because she’s really into him and wants to tell him loads of things but she knows she never will. This is one of my favourite songs off the album, my rating… 9/10
“If I could say what I want to say I'd say I wanna blow you... away Be with you every night Am I squeezing you too tight If I could say what I want to see I want to see you go down On one knee Marry me today Guess, I’m wishing my life away With these things I’ll never say.”
*~ 10. My World (3:27) ~*
This is one of my favourite songs of Avril’s from the album, this is because it sort of gives you an insight to what Avril’s life was like before she got into the music business. The guitar is a lot slower on this compared to most of the other songs. You can tell this is one of my favourite songs because whenever it comes on I’ll be singing along to it and I know all the words! :D
“Can't help if I space in a daze, My eyes tune out the other way, I may switch off and go in a daydream, In this head my thoughts are deep, But sometimes I can't even speak, Would someone be and not pretend? I'm off again in my World”
*~ 11. Nobody’s Fool (3:57) ~*
I really like this song, but that’s probably just because Avril raps in it! Which I think is really cool, don’t ask why I just like rapping! Nobody’s fool is about Avril not letting anyone make a fool of her and that she can’t be changed, she’ll always be the same person which shows how strong Avril is as a person. My rating… 7/10
“If you're trying to turn me into someone else Its easy to see I'm not down with that I'm not nobody's fool If you're trying to turn me into something else I've seen enough and I'm over that I'm not nobody's fool If you wanna bring me down Go ahead and try…”
*~ 12. Too Much To Ask (3:46) ~*
This is quite a slow song with some electric guitar in the background, but it does get faster towards the chorus. Not one of my favourite songs off the album. It’s about a guy who is a drug addict who thinks he is a really tough guy and can’t show any feelings for anyone in case it wrecks his image, Avril tries to prove how pathetic he is acting. My rating… 4/10
“Everytime I try to make you smile You're always feeling sorry for yourself Everytime I try to make you laugh You can't Youre too tough You think you're loveless Is that too much that I'm asking for?”
*~ 13. Naked (3:27) ~*
Another slow song with the electric guitar in the background, it’s slow and quiet in the verses but then it speeds up and goes louder at the chorus. Naked is about a girl and her boyfriend who can see through her cover and see what she’s naturally like, he can see straight through any cover she tries to put on herself. I really like this song, my rating… 8/10
“I never felt like this before I'm naked Around you Does it show? You see right through me And I can't hide I'm naked Around you And it feels so right.”
*~ MY VERDICT ~* After listening to Let Go a few times I think that my opinion on punk music has changed quite a bit as punk music can be mixed with pop sounds which Avril has done and she has made it sound really good. There are loads of really good songs on there which I keep going back to listen to. I would recommend the album for any age group as my mom likes some of the music and I even found my 4 year old sister dancing along to it!
