Avril Lavigne - Let Go. 2002.
~~Background~~ This was the little skater popsters' first offering and I originally bought it for my son who was then fast approaching 8 years old, which kinda gives the game away in relation to the intended audience, which I reckon was 8-15. The funny thing is I was about to give it to a charity shop, when, like all my old CD's, which are now being converted to iTunes (if they are worthy), I had a listen.
I am ashamed to admit that I have actually kept a couple of tracks, and surprisingly feel that they have gotten better with time.
I was also quite surprised to see that Avril is actually credited with co writing every track, though so is another guy, Cliff Magness, so who done what I do not know.
I certainly remember the original video for ska8er boy which I did enjoy in a kind of McFly, Busted sort of harmless, bubble gum rock way.
Anyway, on to the serious (or maybe not) business of the tracks:
~~~Track Listing~~~ 1. Losing Grip Almost a metal number, certainly a great guitar backing with drums that are meaningful and sung by anyone (probably male) with a gruff voice and throw in a few screams it would been good. As opening tracks go, the music is great; the vocals are too weak and overpowered by the music. 5/10.
2. Complicated Now I actually really like this, it is a good teen angst song with a really catchy hook and chorus. Nice melodic guitar work, and almost orchesteral backing. This should have been the opener. I have added this to my iTunes library. 8/10.
3. Sk8er Boi This is almost, but not quite, a classic. Great story telling by lyrics, great guitars, great drums, great synthesiser work. A really well targeted poppy song that works very well, also added to my iTunes library. 8/10.
4. I'm With You Not such a well known song, but probably one of her best on this album. Shades of Evanescence, maybe Christina Aguilera, certainly a more mature offering from Avril. A ballad with some angst. Good song, another 'keeper'. 8/10.
5. Mobile I don't get this, it is like she is experimenting with different styles after the last song. This does not suit, more old style than her other stuff, bit of a 70's feel about it, don't like it, despite the stunning guitar riffs. 4/10.
6. Unwanted More ballad/angst that leads into quite a nice metal like chorus. Quite dark for her, which actually works. Has a feel of Staind about it to be, and if they did this I would probably get it, this is not a keeper, but okay. 6/10.
8. Anything But Ordinary Bit like as before, at least she tries to be a bit more alive with the vocals. The lyrics are ultra cheesy. Yuk. 2/10.
9. Things I'll Never Say Very pop/rock. Pleasant, but that is all. 3/10.
10. My World This feels like it has been stolen from a Sheryl Crow song book and been sung by Natalie Imbruglia, it is just awful. 1/10.
11. Nobody's Fool A complete 'la, la, la' type of song...something that would be played as a backing track on a teen sitcom. Boring. 1/10.
12. Too Much to Ask Not as bad as the last few tracks, but still very weak compared to the first few tracks. 2/10.
13. Naked Quite a catchy number and again shades of Sheryl Crow, also a bit like Texas. It is actually a pretty good tune and decent backing music, but you get the feeling she is just too youing to do justice to a song like this. 4/10.
~~~~Final Thoughts~~~~ Well, to say the album is rubbish would be unfair as tracks 2, 3 and 4 are really quite good and do what they are supposed to. As a debut album though it is pretty weak and I am glad it was not bought for me.
My final words to describe this album are 'inoffensive', 'pleasant', which just about sums it up. I would not recommend this album as a whole, just buy the tracks you like from iTunes, it'll work out cheaper, becasue you won't like many.

I have bits from the album, cos my sister bought it - it's okay enough, you're right, but nothing special is going on here. And then with her next two albums, she completely sells herself out, gets an ego, and does her best to annoy everyone with her diva. Shame.

Advantages: 'Complicated', 'I'm With You', 'Things I'll Never Say', Youthful joyous power pop with occasional hints of unexpected musical maturity Disadvantages: Occasional lyrical howlers, 'Too Much To Ask For', the rapped section of 'Nobodys Fool'
