Jason Donovan - Let It Be Me
Who/What?
You know Kylie right? Well, back when she was called Kylie Minogue, she starred in a little known Australian soap called Neighbours, and her on-screen (and off-screen) boyfriend was played by a fresh faced youth going by the name of Jason Donovan. Neighbours exploded (sometimes literally), and Kylie and Jason fever gripped the civilised world. Then he objected to being called gay, took lots of drugs, waved much of his career goodbye, and appeared in Joseph before disappearing off his face of the earth. It's fifteen years later and he may not be fresh-faced anymore (doesn't even seem that airbrushing can hide that fact), but he's back with a new album. I can barely contain my indifference.
Highlights
This is going to be difficult. There's a whopping seventeen tracks here, each one more mawkish than the last. When Michael J. Fox took his first trip in a De Lorean, he rocked the prom and came back to the future having saved his parents marriage and done many wonderful things. Jason, on the other hand, seems like he's run all his ideas through a sewage plant in high summer and returned with the result. The only saving grace I can think of is that a lot of the songs were hits before he got his hands on them, and that really should be the way you remember them.
Lowlights
Our Jase seems to think that raping the 50's and 60's is going to allow him to move back into the more salubrious areas of Chartsville, and the sad thing is, that all those 13-19 year olds from the 80's (who these days have about 5 kids and don't laugh anymore when the Tena Lady advert comes on), are more than likely going to fork out for the mortgage. The whole thing is vapid, uninspired, unimaginative and Supreme Being(TM) knows we've seen it all before. Still, I suppose you have to applaud the fact that he's making an effort in the first place, even if his choice of songs makes you wonder whether he ever did put down the crack-pipe.
Verdict
An album typical of a faded Australian soapstar from the decade that gave us greed. It's nice that bands like NKOTB and Take That can put themselves back together, but Jason doesn't seem quite able to perform the same feat and this album is proof positive that his finger is no longer on the pulse. This is the sort of thing I'm expecting to see from Ray Quinn in 2023, and I'm looking forward to that about as much as I am to wearing incontinence pants and pining for the good old days. Pray Mr Donovan flops, that way, we'll never have another album from him again.
