With Let It Rain, Tracy Chapman has found a perfect platform for her potent voice. She and ... more
coproducer John Parish have opted for a muted approach where guitars and tambourines stir among simple, unadorned rhythms. The singer's once-strummed-acoustic-guitar is replaced by a more constant tidal flow, with handclaps, gospel-tinged choruses, and an open-barrelled bass drum marking time. Chapman even goes trip-hopping on "In the Dark"--a strangely shadowy highpoint featuring her artfully quavering vocal melody. The jumpy interludes on "Hard Wired" and the chamber interlude of "Over in Love" (that is reminiscent of the gorgeous interstitial tunes on Hem's debut) add colour. This is an awesomely crafted folk-soul creation for seasoned fans and for those who love Beth Orton and Norah J ones. --Andrew Bartlett

Advantages: wonderful, melancholic music Disadvantages: none
I'd never really encountered TracyChapman till recently, sure, I loved Fast Car but that was a long time ago, days of late night sessions and fraught times. I love the cover, Chapman is intriguing to say the least and her photo draws you in.
This is her first album for a while and comes a full 15 years after her self titled debut. In the intervening years there have been rumours of very sad times and this is much reflected in the lyrics - later. I originally heard a review of this back in May on Radio 4's Front Row - very good programme for finding new enjoyments.
It wasn't until last month I found it, scandelously cheap in a local record shop, it's not left my cd player since and is the most effecting album of this year, in my humble opinon.
Chapman has a lovely yielding and deep voice, lilting and very singable to, lulling ...
Advantages: Powerful and meaningful lyrics that are together with beautifully produced songs. Disadvantages: None.
This review is taken from my Dooyoo page also but as I put so much effort into writing it I felt I should have it on both sites. It is however, entirely my own work and I absolutely love this album. I really hope you enjoy and appreciate reading it, thank you!
TracyChapman the album is without doubt of the best album's which I have ever bought simply for its real beauty in inner song form. TracyChapman is you do not know is a singer and songwriter who began her career as a busker and really has taken herself to the next level, she has performed at many anti-poverty shows around the world. This album was released in 1988 and contains 11 absolutely beautifully written songs.
The album is very country folk and this becomes very clear throughout the album, the lyrics are quite simply umbelivable and they are just so powerful which ...
Advantages: Perfect story-telling songwriting, exceptional vocals, Chapman's best work Disadvantages: If there is any it would be that the album is too short!
Warning: This review contains some adult subject matters that some people may be sensitive to. Words have been edited but the meanings remain plain.
Born in the Heartland and educated in New England TracyChapman grew in special soils. She has deep and capable emotions that she easily traces across your ears and sweetly affects your heart. She carries a beauty that is seen, heard and felt. Now she gives you her seventh major release on the Electra/Atlantic label, Where you Live.
The Road to Where you Live.
TracyChapman seemed to appear from a cloud in 1988 with her self-titled release. She voiced struggles and passions that we absorbed and lived along with her from this album. Fast Car was probably the most well known track from an album full of powerful and conveying music. Tracy brought innocence and a new social conscious ...

Album Notes
Personnel includes: Tracy Chapman (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, electric banjo, clarinet, bass); Joe Gore (electric guitar, ukelele, piano); Greg Leisz (electric pedal steel, baritone guitar, dobro); Matt Brubeck (cello); Patrick Warren (accordion, tac piano); Patrick Warren (piano, organ, keyboards); Michael Webster (piano, vibraphone); Larry Taylor (upright bass); John Parish (bass); Joey Waronker (drums, tambourine, shaker, sound effects); Jeanie Tracy (background vocals). Recorded at The Paint Studios, Sausalito, California. Tracey Chapman's sixth album continues her tradition of immaculately crafted, self-effacing, deceptively low-key songs that consistently get to the root of things. That the most commercial track here ("Say Hallelujah") is about a funeral speaks volumes about Chapman's songwriting approach. "The bucket is kicked/The body is gone" she sings prosaically; "Eternal rest for the weary/Mourners party tonight." It's a catchy song that manages to retain its optimism despite its mortal subject. With LET IT RAIN Chapman seems to be settling in to an acceptance of her cult status after her initial success with "Fast Car" and the later "Give Me One Reason." This is high-quality songwriting in a natural setting. There are few flashy production tricks save a vocal effect or two, and no visible straining after a hit in evidence. Her emotions are laid bare time and again on tracks such as "In the Dark," with its confessional ambience, while "Hard Wired" is as close to a diatribe as Chapman gets, its subject the invasion of privacy in the name of commerce. LET IT RAIN is a hard-nosed, no-nonsense collection in a deceptively fragile setting.
