Advantages: Sometimes, there *are* no advantages. Disadvantages: Syrupy, schmaltzy, bad attempt at cashing in.
Jason Donovan - Let It Be Me
Who/What?
You know Kylie right? Well, back when she was called Kylie Minogue, she starred in a little known Australian soap called Neighbours, and her on-screen (and off-screen) boyfriend was played by a fresh faced youth going by the name of Jason Donovan. Neighbours exploded (sometimes literally), and Kylie and Jason fever gripped the civilised world. Then he objected to being called gay, took lots of drugs, waved much of his career goodbye, and appeared in Joseph before disappearing off his face of the earth. It's fifteen years later and he may not be fresh-faced anymore (doesn't even seem that airbrushing can hide that fact), but he's back with a new album. I can barely contain my indifference.
Highlights
This is going to be difficult. There's a whopping seventeen tracks here, each one ...
Advantages: A different take on comedy, great social commentary Disadvantages: Some tracks can be a little basic or short
white skin colour and he mentions Café au lait (french for 'coffee with milk) as another reference to race. the track is funny and the chorus is catchy and energetic. A good way to start the album and no real lines have been crossed, despite the touchy topic.
[7.5/10]
I will provide an excerpt of the quirkiest lyrics after each choice.
{Oh I hate vanilla ice cream, I like chocolate instead
I hope she likes her soul food with a little Wonder Bread
Don't call it Jungle Fever cause that just isn't right
I am not a racist, some of my best friends are white}
[Track 2 - Baby]
The track starts nice and wholesome with Lynch masquerading as the doting father until the first chorus when he savages his newborn's aesthetics. A slighly harsh view to be adopting but a funny song all the same. The track is funny in places but I do think it is funniest ...
Advantages: A fun, fast-paced political/legal thriller that keeps you on your toes. Disadvantages: Some of the characters behave inconsistently and border on caricature.
the author?s credit ? is believably delivered. I have seen many a tale come a cropper due to plot manipulations that lack any sort of credibility, so it is refreshing to read a writer who does it well.
At five hundred pages, ?The Simple Truth? is a substantial read and, generally speaking, there is little in it that qualifies as unnecessary padding. Even in the places where it slows down for a bit of introspection and character development, the extra narrative is clearly justified by later developments. My one criticism is that some of the villains of the piece ? especially those in military uniform ? do come across as somewhat clichéd and stereotypical (all brawn and no brain) and can be unintentionally amusing more than menacing. As an interesting aside, the book also takes a fascinating look at the inner workings of the Supreme Court ...
