Who is this guy? I have to say that I personally think he is absolutely brilliant and someone for us to focus on in 2007 - I really feel it is his year.
I knew I had to have this album when I heard the musical genius masterpiece, that is his number one single Grace Kelly. This is just what I have been waiting for. His music mirrors aspects of Elton John, Freddie Mercury and Scissor Sisters; all of which I love already so he couldn't really go wrong with me.
I can only describe Mika's style as 'sunshine' music. It is bouncy, fun and he exudes eccentricity! You only have to see his album cover to know that you are instantly in for a really good album.
It's worth listening to lyrics of Mika's tracks because sometimes however bizarre or fun they might sounds, they often ring quite true.
I recently heard him referred to as a "one-hit wonder" but I think that person was very much mistaken.
As with all my reviews, I will go through track by track to give my opinion in detail.
1) Grace Kelly
This first track is Mika's first single which is currently at the time of writing this review, UK number one, as is this album. This tune is bouncy, happy and slightly anthemic.
Based on Mika's experiences of trying to get into the music industry and keep his own style of music, he has taken what was probably a frustrating time and turned it on its head. It is unlike anything I have ever heard but I can compare it perhaps to ELO and Scissor Sisters. He has such a unique style of singing and a great range of voice. He refers to 'Freddie' in this song which indicates Freddie Mercury and boy on that bit he truly does sound like him. It's wacky and silly but it's allowed to be!
2) Lollipop
At the beginning of this track you may feel very unsure about liking it - it starts with a child's voice - but give it chance. It's not meant to be taken too seriously but is so catchy. To begin with the beat sounds a little bit like Will Smith's Switch but it emerges to be quite 'bubbly' and again, fun (notice a theme?). I'm not too sure what the lyrics indicate but who cares, it's great. Towards the end of the track trumpets, etc come in and that finishes it nicely.
3) My Interpretation
This track is slightly more gentle and reminds me a bit of Robbie Williams/Take That. It is quite a smooth rock track and just proves that Mika can cover all styles. If it makes any sense to anyone who hears it I can also hear similarities to 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' by Deep Blue Something in there as well, though not quite as raucous.
4) Love Today
This track is quite dancey and really makes me think of Scissor Sisters - particularly Jake Shears' style of singing. There's even some rock guitars in there!
5) Relax (Take It Easy)
I'm sure I have heard this song before but I don't think it's a cover version. It sounds very 80-ish with a few synths and 80's drums. Reminiscent of The Beloved's Sweet Harmony but faster. I can imagine this reaching a wider audience.
6) Any Other World
This tracks begins very slowly, builds up to an orchestral crescendo then takes it back down again to a slower pace. I'm not as keen on this track as others but it may grow on me more in time and maybe this is because it is such a change to most of the other tracks. Am not too sure about the children's choir singing along towards the end. Definitely interesting though.
7) Billy Brown
This reminds me a little bit of The Beatles especially the chorus. Also, again just my opinion but I'm hearing 'Easy Street' from the film Annie!? A very good track and highly original. This guy is amazing!
8) Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)
Definitely Scissor Sisters again following a bit of a Queen beginning (Fat Bottomed Girls?). Very upbeat and dancey. I really like this track so much. I hope he releases this as a single - I can't wait to see the video. There's a pause, hand-clappy bit at the end (dare you not to join in!).
9) Stuck In The Middle
A funky honky-tonk piano begins this track which reminds me of Elton John (Honky-Tonk Woman). It pounds along nicely, especially when the drums kick in.
10) Happy Ending/Over My Shoulder
My first thought when Happy Ending began was Atomic Kitten as there are female voices in the intro but Mika's begins singing and you become aware that this is another slow and gentle song. As with the other slow track I'm just not sure he pulls them off as well but there's no doubting that he has a good voice and the lyrics are always good. It may be down to the fact that I'm not always personally a fan of slower tracks. it soon builds up towards the end using an orchestra and what sounds like a gospel choir.
Over My Shoulder is another slow (very) track which is definitely too sad and slow for me. Radiohead springs to mind but then although they sometimes sounded depressing, were quite good.
11) Ring Ring (Bonus Track)
Beginning, as you'd expect, with phones ringing. Mika's voice definitely sounds like Robbie Williams on this track. It is very much a 'urgent' rock track which works.
Like him or not Mika is very much here to stay, I'm sure. We are in desperate need of a new style of music and here he is, sliding down on his colourful rainbow of bubble-pop. There's obviously a couple of tracks to not be so sure about but overall this is excellent for a debut album and, as with Scissors Sisters, I'm sure he will only improve on his next album.
From what I have heard and read, Mika struggled for a while to get his big break as he refused to comply with what the record companies wanted him to be. I for one am glad he stood his ground!

I think it also has a touch of "The Beatles" too :)

Really well written, detailed and pretty accurate description of this CD, there certainly is a unique mixture of styles in there, and I can clearly here the ones you mention too, when I first hear the single " Grace Kelly " I thought it was The Darkness.........Roy.......
