I bought Mikas' debut album, Life in Cartoon Mition, a few weeks ago and having listened to it quite long and hard I
thought it was about time I wrote a review.
Like most I first heard of Mika when he released his debut single 'Grace Kelly' which like many debut singles of late went
to number one, but this track and artist really deserves it. The track, which is the first on the album, shows his massive
vocal range and in many parts shows the amazing simiarity in tone to the late great Freddie Mercury, which is praise
enough. The track is a classic upbeat pop track with a cracking catch sing-a-long-a corus.
Track two, Lollipop, is one of my favourites, if a little bizarre lyrically as it appears to vaguely relate sucking on a
lollipop to love.
The third track, My Interpretation, keeps the mood upbeat even though lyrically the song is not too cheerful focusing on
the spit and anger you feel when a relationship goes bad.
Love Today, the fourth track is another cracker and was the second single released and is mainly sung falsetto (Bee Gees
esque). It is yet another marvelously cheerful track but this time with lyrics to match.
The next track, Relax (Take it Easy), brings the tempo down a little, with a string back beat and subtle synthesised
melody, its not slow but is chilled none the less trying to get the message of not stressing across.
Track six, Any other world brings the tempo down even further, with almost a dream like feeling to it, no base line just
strings (which start gently and come into force in between verses) and his pure voice delivering ode like lyrics which
seem to convey the feelings felt during a life changing experience such as death.
Billy Brown, the next track, is one of my favourites, and has great rhyming lyrics about a man confused about his
sexuality. The lyrics have a great truth to them but are delivered in a way that you can't help laugh at.
Track eight, Big Girl (you are beautiful), was the third single, conveys a message not often heard in the entertainment
industry, that larger women are beautiful too. The track picks the tempo up again with another strong base line.
The next track, Stuck in the middle, is piano based and moderately paced but just like the other tracks jolly and cheery, with catch lyrics including the tag line 'Is there anybody home' :-) even though again they are serious in parts.
The final track, Ring Ring, ends the album well, bringing the tempo down nicely with a silkly female backing vocals and even some input from a gospel choir.
There is also a hidden / secret track, called 'over my shoulder', which can be found about 5 minutes after the end of 'Ring Ring' but I think it is fairly week sounding like a lament with just a hint of piano and ghostly lyrics.
All in all I think this is a superb album which I think everyone should have in their collections as it makes me smile everytime I listen to it

Advantages: A wider range of music - amazing! Disadvantages: May not appeal to all tastes. Fantastic tracks mean that other 'not-so-great' songs (not many) are unfairly compared.
