After a somewhat shaky start with his first three albums, David Gray Finally hit it big with the self financed White Ladder in '98, but many were asking whether he could ever emulate such a performance again. A New Day at Midnight, David's follow up album certainly made a good attempt, but it is only with the release of Life In Slow Motion that David Gray has truly cemented his 8 year move from acoustic obscurity to a true musical star.
From the moment Life in Slow Motion begins, you know that the album's going to be a good'un - the opening, faint, tinkling notes of the first track 'Alibi' slowly fade to silence before an explosion of the unique vocal stylings of Gray. This is followed by 'The One I Love', the first single released from the album and by far one of David's best ever songs. Its catchy tune, powerful voice and instrumentation are reminiscent of the great success of 'Babylon' and 'Be Mine'.
It is in fact hard to pick out many songs which stand out above the rest on this album due mainly to the high quality of all of the tracks. This is not to say, however, that all of the tracks are 'samey' in the least. For fans of David's more upbeat, tuneful work, 'Hospital Food' (the second single to be released) and to a lesser extent 'Nos da Cariad' (goodnight my love in welsh) will not disappoint, whilst there are plenty of the darker and more mellow songs with 'Ain't No Love' being a truly great track, coupled with the album's finale 'Disappearing World', the slow pace and poetic lyrics of which end the album in the perfect mood for David Gray.
Fans of White Ladder and Babylon will certainly love this album, but there is a lot to entice new David Gray fans, and fans of Coldplay, the more mellow work of Travis, and James Blunt to name but a few should definitely give it a try!

Advantages: Melancholy, thought provoking lyrics, beautiful emotionally loaded vocals-just lovely. Disadvantages: Bit mellow and sometimes the songs blend in to each other a bit.
