Critically acclaimed, massively popular, this album literally caused a massive stir, not only for its wonderful songs with their meaningful lyrics, but for its blatant blasphemy(well, this is Madonna I'm talking about). This album is one of those rare ones, where every track is as good as the singles released. First on the album is the title, "Like a Prayer". No one could possibly do justice to the overwhelming grandeur that is this song, and not even Madonna most ardent critics could fault the songs sincerity toward her confusion(to put it nicely) toward the Catholic church. The video is equally breathtaking, while it courts bad publicity, it is in itself a faultless piece of cinematic art. Whew. So that being over, the rest of the album moves along seamlessly. "Express Yourself" is a lively, purely pop song, demonstrating "girl power" way before the Spices. Difficult subjects are dealt with aplomb, divorce in "Till Death Do Us Part", child abuse in "Oh Father", and even the Spanish Civil War in "Pray for Spanish Eyes". These songs are beautifully meolodic, and more importantly, easy to listen to. However, this album never forgets it is a pop album, and "Cherish" is a perfect example of pure, playful pop, with an extremely catchy chorus, which is what Madonna does best. "Dear Jessie" is a gorgeous, rosy cherub of a song, and the album is rounded off by the simply weird "Act of Contrition" which terrified the living daylight out of me whan I first heard it. This album is 80s Madonna at her most supreme, and could easily fend of competition from her more recent, "cooler" albums(although they are great as well).
