Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' Album, released in 1989 is a magnificent collection of music which I never tire of listening to, much of Madonna's music pleases my ears, but this has to be my favourite.
The first track 'Like A Prayer' is an awe inspiring piece of music which never fails to move me whenever I hear it, the first few chords of the song offset it well and are very distinctive! Madonna's voice is fantastic and brings such raw and heartfelt quality to the song, it carries along effortlessly amongst the array of beautiful music and rising voices of the gospel choir... A true masterpiece!
'Express Yourself'... A definite girl power song released well before the Spice Girls adopted the slogan, this record is fantastic, its upbeat tempo and positive attitude amount to a song that can only serve to make you feel good when hearing it, the lyrics are telling us ladies 'don't go for second best' and inspiring us to bring out the love in our man by letting him know what he would be missing if we weren't around. Madonna is truly inspiring and gives it her all, this song had a fantastic video to match!
'Love Song'.. I have to say, not one of my favourites, considering this is a collaboration with Prince, it is hugely disappointing.. it drones along to a drab beat, never seems to get anywhere, and is a waste of space on this album.
'Til Death do us Part'... This is an intimate and extremely revealing song as to how Madonna felt during her Marriage to 'Mr Penn', it is clearly very personal..'I think I interrupt your life, when you laugh it cuts me just like a knife, I'm not your friend, I'm just your little wife'.. despite the subject matter being this way, the song is extremely upbeat and it is fascinating to listen to.
'Promise to Try'... A very beautiful ballad, about Madonna's Mother...very touching.
'Dear Jessie'.. This song is fantastic, the lyrics are wonderful and very childlike, although it seems Madonna has had too much sherry trifle, this really is a cute and appealing touch to the album, it is uptempo with trumpets and violins galore... My daughter loves it!
'Oh Father'... This rather dark but very moving ballad seems to be about Madonna growing up and her feelings towards her father, and it seems rather as if she directs it at her religion aswell... The piano is gorgeous in this song and the whole piece just tugs at the heart strings.
'Keep it Together'.... What can I say?? A fantastic dance record that speaks about family values and their importance.. fantastic stuff!
'Spanish Eyes'.. Another of my favourites on this album, Madonna sings her heart out on this one, and it's Spanish Guitar throughout makes for a beautifully written and enjoyable ballad.
'Act of Contrition'... This seems to be to me a combination of the 'like a prayer' track played backwards, with Madonna just rambling on about 'being reserved and having reservations'... not one of her better compositions.
I hope my opinion has helped in some way, I do think that this is truly an album worth investing in, and is already a classic.. Thankyou
