My other half told me he wanted this album and when my brother asked what to get him for his birthday this was my suggestion. The reply I got was ' You are joking, whats he want that rubbish for?' I was thinking pretty much the same. How wrong can you be! The first couple of times I heard it, I wasn't really listening. Id heard the singles and thought they were catchy but nothing special. I forgot all about it. A few months later my boyfriend decided to play it a lot in the car, its a grower. I now play it a lot too.
~*~The tracks~*~
The following is my interpretation about the songs, yours might be different.
Smile - This was the first single release from Lily. Its about a relationship thats now over and after getting through the initial hurt being able to smile about it. Its an uptempo song with Lilys trademark chat through the verses with a more sing song chorus.
Knock Em Out - This is about being chatted up by people you dont wanna be chatted up by. Its got quite a bit of background talking setting the scene of actually being in a club or bar. The lyrics on this are quite witty. Again the choruses are talked and
the verses are sung. This one has a bit more of attitude about it.
LDN - This was another single release. This is my sons favourite song and he sings along to the chorus. Its about seeing the good and bad in a place and how appearances can be deceptive. Lily actually sings most of the way through this one and its very catchy hence the singing along!
Everythings just wonderful - This is about looking on the bright side when your up to your neck in debt and not stick thin. This one is my other halfs favourite. He likes the line 'I guess thats just the way the cookie crumbles' in the chorus. The lyrics probably don't apply to Lily anymore as this was no doubt written before she had any money!
Not big - This song is a bitter slagging off of your ex, referring to his performance in bed etc. As with most if the songs it is upbeat and has a melodic chorus.
Friday Night - This is again written about a night out. It refers to people trying to start trouble after a few drinks. One of the things I like about the album is its not just love songs or broke up songs as a lot are. This is a fine example of a song written about something else for once!
Shame for you - Written about someone not treating you right and so dont get what they want from you. Another of my sons favourites because of a repetitive noise that sounds like passing wind so he calls it the farting song!Littlest things - Again a single. This is the sweetest song on the album about reminiscing when a relationship is over. It shows Lilys more sensitive side and although not as uptempo as the majority of the tracks it fits in well.
Take what you take - Obviously Lily has had enough of unwanted advice from older, supposedly wiser, people. As she quotes well known cliches and basically tells them all to mind their own.
Friend of mine - I found I could relate to this song personally as its about a friendship thats turned sour because a friend is going off the rails. Lily sums up how she feels about it and a lot rung true for me and a friendship I lost in similar circumstances.
Alfie - The final single with a great video. Lily is offering big sister advise to a younger brother going off the rails. Its quite funny especially along with the video which features her brother as a puppet.
~*~What do I like about this album?~*~
The lyrics are all about real life. Something that you can relate to. They are simple and easy to get. No hidden messages, straight to the point. The songs are catchy. The choruses tend to be sing a long tunes, filled in with spoken lyrics in the verses. Some of the songs have talking in the background, setting the scene. Its cheerful. A lot of the stuff I listen to is deep and depressing! This instantly puts you in a good mood. Lily. I like her attitude. Shes written this album from the heart, not trying to be clever or technical, just written about the stuff around her. I haven't really gone into the music in too much detail concentrating more on the lyrics as this is what I hear most when I listen to music. The music itself is all of a very similar pop style vein and I'm not technically knowledgeable enough to try to explain it any further! I don't have a specific style of music I I am into. I either like it or don't its that simple and this I like.
~*~Any bad stuff?~*~
There is some bad language. My six year old son hasnt seemed to notice it as it tends to be in the verses and not the catchy sing a long choruses. Older kids will probably pick up on it though and so it may not be suitable listening.
~*~Overall~*~
The album has been around for a while and so more than likely available at less than full price. If you are looking for a catchy, sing along, put you in a good mood, ready for going out album, this is much more than alright!
The album sleeve has a picture of Lily on the front on a bike surrounded by cartoon images. The words to all 11 songs are printed in the booklet. The album also has a link to Lilys website www.LilyAllenMusic.com and is released on Regal records.
