and its men were lionised when they toured there. On the showing of this over-stuffed (76 minutes) collection, one understands why. Heath had found the right combination of fiery soloists and strict discipline. The imaginative arrangements are played with perfect but swinging precision. Heath commissioned writers from all over the world and the opening "Turn On The Heath" is the work of Ed Finckel, a regular arranger for Benny Goodman's bands. Also included is an imaginative orchestration of Fats Waller's six-part "London Suite", Heath had as hot a collection of great soloists as one could for. It included trumpeter Kenny Baker, tenorist Tommy Whittle and Jackie Armstrong on trombone. The rhythm section was powered by Jack Parnell on drums and had Dave Goldberg, a world-class player on guitar. The sound quality of these 1948 transfers is superb, and retains the infectious excitement and feel of the big occasion that seemed to accompany this band wherever it went. Heath was a strict disciplinarian and tough with his musicians. He chose them well and the credit for these monumental performances must be his.--Steve Voce
