Live At Carnegie Hall
Mikhail Pletnev made a belated Carnegie Hall debut as a pianist in November 2000.

Listening to the recital on this CD confirms the wisdom of the pianist's decision to resign as music director of the Russian National Orchestra. In the Bach-Busoni "Chaconne", Pletnev's crescendi wash over the listener like tidal waves; the mighty edifice of the music seems to rise mysteriously and inexorably, on its own. The angry surges in the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata op.111 are perhaps overdrawn. But the concluding movement's variations glide by as if in a dream, suggesting the transformation of the earlier movement's passionate anger into a vision of paradise beyond the power of words to describe. In Chopin's Four Scherzos, Pletnev emphasises too many details and inhibits the music's lyrical sweep. But the charm and dazzling pyrotechnics of his encores help make this the first great piano recording of the millennium. After Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Scarlatti and Moszkowski, Pletnev's fifth and final encore was Balakirev's transcendentally difficult Islamey. The superhuman virtuosity, sonorous splendour and technicolour exoticism of this performance will knock your socks off. --Stephen Wigler

Advantages: Live, and excellent sound Disadvantages: NONE
...Recorded live at the impressive Althorp Park in Northamptonshire U.K., it's easy to tell why this album was nominated for a Grammy. What a better way to celebrate her 60th birthday then with a live concert! Bassey is vocally superior to counterparts half her age, as she flawlessly belts out all her best on this CD. Having studied voice and music theory myself, I can appreciate the quality of Ms. Bassey's voice that progessively gets better with age. There's no shaky grandma voice here when she hit's those unbelievable high notes in "Hey Jude", "This Is My Life", and "I Wanna Know What Love Is"! Not only is every song a vocal masterpiece, but her audience interaction is fun and playful.
An expanded version of this same concert is available on the Import CD titled "Diamond Collection" and on another CD titled "Contemporary Classics...

It Really Is The Best Review ofBest Of James Bond, The (30th Anniversary Collection) - Original Soundtracksby
antnelson
Advantages: Lots of tracks and catchy chorus's Disadvantages: a few 80's tunes
...Good old bond is known for its theme tunes, and this whole CD is dedicated to them. with the
theme tunes from all the films (except 'The World Is Not Enough') it will keep you going for
months. From Dr. No To Live and Let Die, from Goldfinger to Goldeneye. They are all great theme
tunes, espcially with ShirleyBassey Powerful voice on Goldfinger, it will have you singing
along in no time. Usually I don't like 80's songs but the 80's songs on this are actually good.
So this Soundtrack CD is the one to buy....
