hear Crazy Horse live with original leader Danny Whitten, the insanely talented guitarist who died of a heroin overdose in late 1972, inspiringTonight's the Night. Tuned-in fans have been awaiting this very set for at least a dozen years, as it was originally to be tacked onto the end of a Decade-style triple CD of outtakes. Thankfully, this well-recorded live set from the infamous Fillmore East was well worth the wait. Here are scorching, extended takes of "Down by the River," "Winterlong," and "Cowgirl in the Sand," each propelled by guitar interplay so delightful you have to keep rewinding to hear it again. In fact, bits of it seem to prefigure the ways that Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would feed off each other in the band Television, only with less of a sweet edge. But the world doesn't need any more arguments that Young was a proto-punk; what the world does need is at least a dozen more releases from Neil's archives! And hopefully, with this awesome live album, the floodgates have truly been opened and there are many more to come, in the vein of Dylan'sBootlegseries. This disc is worth it alone for the version of "Wondering," a tune not officially recorded until many years later in Neil's weird '80s rockabilly phase.--Mike McGonigal

Live At Fillmore East [DVD Audio] - Allman Brothers
Additional notes
Album Notes: This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system. The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the '70s' tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York's fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and "Whipping Post" still have the power to rivet and move. On display here is the Allmans' fabled chemistry at its finest. The band not only rocks, it rolls, swings, and stretches out in exploratory, jazzy passages. The dual guitar interplay of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts glides effortlessly over the propulsive rhythm section of Oakley and twin drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, while Greg Allman's powerful blues voice and melodic keyboard work provides the icing on the cake. Though the later-released THE FILLMORE CONCERTS presents these songs in their original entirety, AT FILLMORE EAST, with its seamless edits of multiple performances, may be the superior recording. It highlights all the glint and sparkle of what still ranks among the best jamming committed to record.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (8/19/71, p.39) - "...The Allman Brothers had many fine moments at the Fillmores and this live album must surely epitomize all of them..." Rolling Stone (9/30/71, p.42) - "...The Allman Brothers Band as a whole is making some of the best rock band music anywhere these days....ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILMORE EAST is their best so far..." Rolling Stone (8/8/02, p.82) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...Captured America's best blues-rock band at its peak..."
Advantages: Southern Blues par excellence Disadvantages: Not so good if you don't like blues
...If you live in the UK and watch Top Gear on the BBC TV then you've already heard a Duane Allman composition.
The AllmanBrothers Band produce Southern Blues Rock that will compare with the best. If you enjoy the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd then you'll probably enjoy the AllmanBrothers, and this CD gives you the cream of the crop.
Delve into this CD for blues style rock with an American flavour and gripping guitar solos. The songs are longer than your average pop song, and filled with wonderful instrumental sections such as the one used in the Top Gear introduction.
Great for driving to, great for sitting on your own with the stereo turned up. Music for those who really enjoy their rock....

Advantages: Wonderful songwriting from one of the best around Disadvantages: Not as good as some previous work due to a couple of weaker songs
...Want two, an album with brilliant song writing from Rufus Wainwright! Some controvercial tracks are explored by Rufus so may not be the best choice in album for the strongly religious or the easily offended, due to explicit lyrics about being baptised in certain bodily fluids. However, Want two is a first class album which is full of exciting music that would inspire even the laziest person to want to create music. Wonderful melodies from the piano, and guitar, with Rufus' voice sounding out clearly and perfectly in tune over the top! The album has a couple of average songs which is why the album is not as good as some of his previous albums, but still, it is well worth a listen!
The bonus DVD is also excellent! It is a full-length concert DVD, "Rufus Wainwright Live at the Fillmore", filmed at the historic San Francisco venue. It has...

Advantages: Great Lyrics, great story telling, excellent production Disadvantages: Interlude track of BIG having sex
...'Ready To Die' is the debut solo album from now deceased New York rapper The Notorious BIG (RIP) aka Biggie Smalls aka BIG aka Frank White. The album was released on September 13th, 1994, a date I only recently noticed but hit a chord as BIG's fierce rival and former friend Tupac Shakur died 2 years later on Sept 13th 1996.
The album went multi-platinum and was credited for revitalizing East Coast hip-hop which had fallen behind the gangster sounds of California and the West Coast. It has since been named in countless 100 greatest albums of all time lists, albums to hear before you die lists, and Biggie is usually in the top 3 of any greatest rappers of all time lists (usually battling it out with 2pac, Run DMC or Eminem).
The album was originally supposed to be recorded on Uptown Records where Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs was...
