Davis and John Coltrane, and this album captures the band's gig at Massey Hall in Toronto. It's clearly a chance for Hancock to return to the creative source of Davis's great quintet of the mid-60s and he has excellent companions for the journey in Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove. The CD begins with a reprise of Hancock's "Sorcerer", and bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, so crucial a part of Wayne Shorter's Footprints Live!, prove themselves just as important here. Blade is especially inspiring, pressing Hancock and the horns to complex creative dialogue. The synthesis of "So What" and "Impressions," already closely linked tunes, benefits from the input of some fresh creative thinking, while Brecker's long cadenza on "Naima" is an effective invocation of Coltrane's intrepid virtuosity. Over 78 minutes in length, this is energetic, sometimes brilliant music, in many ways resembling Hancock's own classic, Maiden Voyage. --Stuart Broomer
"...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett

Advantages: Charlie Parker of course. Disadvantages: None.
.... Don't Blame Me
Really mellow, not how I like my parker, lovely tune, lovely playing, but not wild enough for me.
16. Marmaduke
Now we are back to a bit of Parker madness, nice and fast, nice and quirky, gentle piano and drum backing and Charlie doing his thang.
17. Cheers
Interesting number, I can really here soul and funk roots in this and the influence Parker had on later music should not be underestimated.
18. My Old Flame
Not a live track, and one of Parkers best ballads. from the start it draws you in and each note is played with such precision and feeling that it sometimes (with headphones) makes me cry with joy. Perfect, just perfect. I challenge even folks that do not like jazz, not to like this. Silky and edgy all at once. This generally comes up first in seraches for Parker songs, yet is so different from the majority...

Advantages: The music, the directing, the performances. Disadvantages: Very depressing.
...I bought 'Bird', the CharlieParker story from Amazon, for £5.99.
Though the film was released initially in 1988 it has been quite hard to get on DVD (even though it was released in this format in 2006), for some reason, and as a big CharlieParker fan I was thrilled to see lots of copies now available. It carries a British '15' rating. and is a mammoth 154 minutes long (yep, that is nearly three hours).
Clint Eastwood directed this film, partly as a labour of love, as it was never going to be an all time best seller or break any box office records, though it did win best actor at Cannes film festival for Forest Whitaker who plays CharlieParker. Deservedly so, as Forest Whitaker puts in a dark, moody and believable performance, even some of his sax' 'playing' looks convincing. On top of that the New York Film critics award...

Advantages: Great laughs throughout Disadvantages: ???
...I bought this dvd about 3 months ago on Ebay.
After loving his hit series 'PHOENIX NIGHTS',and watching 'Live at the Bolton Albert Halls',about two years previously I knew he was a class act, with a unique comedy style of his own.
It wasnt up until just randomly coming across it on Ebay that I was reminded what a great and hilarious talent he is.
I payed only 0.99p for the dvd, which had been used previously, but had come in great condition.
Only yesterday,I saw it in HMV for 6 pounds, which is great value for such a great installment of laughs.
The DVD is called 'Peter Kay,Live at the Bolton Albert Halls,as part of his 'Mum wants a Bungalow Tour'.
Bolton being his home town,it was bound to be a sell-out
It's filmed as part of his sell out ,180 date tour that spanned 9 months and was seen by 300,000 people.
Many people who are seen...
