The United Nations Orchestra was created by Dizzy Gillespie to "showcase the varied ... more
influences that he considers valuable to the
development of jazz". The 15 member ensemble on
Live at Royal Festival Hall, London, is a true
all-star orchestra, 10 of its members being
bandleaders in their own right. On this 1990
recording, the orchestra was on its last date of a
European tour, and it pulls out all the stops in a
fiery big-band blowout. All the
soloists--saxophonists Paquito D'Rivera and James
Moody, trumpeters Arturo Sandoval and Claudio
Roditi, trombonists Slide Hampton and Steve
Turre--attempt to keep up with Gillespie and the
turbulent percussive undercurrent. This leads to a
lot of passionate soloing, along with some
requisite grandstanding, but even that seems to
fit into the all-star concept of the band. This is
extroverted, aggressively confident big band music
meant to dazzle and delight. The driving rhythm
section is given centre stage on Gillespie's
"Tanga" whereby a lengthy section of solos by
drummer Ignacio Berroa, master percussionist Airto
Moreira and ace conga man Giovanni Hidalgo brings
the house down once again. --Wally Shoup

Beautiful
Review of In A Silent Way [Remastered] - Miles Davis by JaySee

Advantages: Beautiful and relaxing. An outstanding band.
Disadvantages: A little short.

...This 1969 Miles Davis effort was one of his first explorations of electric sounds, and it would have been understandable if he had stopped after this outstanding album. It is short, clocking in at only forty minutes, but what a forty minutes it is. The music has a great feeling of space and relaxation, and it has an ambient feel. This does not detract from the fine solo work that Miles, Wayne Shorter and the rest of the band, however. Tony Williams is in particularly fine form on the drum kit, and John McLaughlin's guitar work is sublime. If you have never experienced Miles' electric period before, this would be a perfect starting point, since it is groundbreaking without being overly challenging, like Bitches Brew.... Read review

A perfect mixture
Review of Pavarotti And Friends (For War Child) - Various Artists by BabsS

Advantages: artists in unfamiliar surroundings
Disadvantages: nothing

...grandi sogni (Edoardo Bennato) 14. Granada (Jon Secada, Luciano Pavarotti) 15. Mediterranean sundance (Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin) 16. Gesú bambino (Joan Osborne, Luciano Pavarotti) 17. Live like horses (Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti) My favorit is definetly the number 12, an interpretation of Mozart’s La ci darem la mano. I mean from Sheryl Crow and Luciano Pavarotti. If it wouldn’t say her name on the cover, you would never guess, that this is Sheryl. Her voice is blending with Pavarotti’s in a perfect mix. This is actually, what I like about this CD. The artist perform a kind of music, they would never dare to try otherwise. I mean, who would connect the Kelly’s to the Ave Maria? Or that one of the biggest tenors of our time performs 'Living like horses'? And I like live-coverages when... Read review

Miles' fusion at its best
Review of Tribute To Jack Johnson, A - Miles Davis by JaySee

Advantages: Ideal example of Miles' style at the time - funky and fun.
Disadvantages: Not for everyone (but definitely worth a shot)

..., and he tells of how whites resented this. Regardless of the complicated history of Johnson - thrown fights, the suicide of his wife, conviction for violating a slavery law (a frame up, says Miles) - the music on this disc surely does him justice. The Music This disc gets the best of both worlds - it is typical Miles rock-jazz fusion from the period, but since it was a film score, it is infinitely more accessible than "Bitches Brew". It begins with rocky drums and a funky bass line. Michael Henderson is on fine form on the Fender bass throughout the album, as is John McLaughlin on electric guitar. The two combine with Bill Cobham's relentless drum beat to get a real groove to the first track - Miles waits through two minutes of the rhythm section before playing. When he does, it is unmistakable Miles - the short, screaming phrases... Read review
