Tube?age and checked out a few of his other songs, some of which, similar to ?Cliffs of Dover? were instrumentals again led by a great sounding guitar. So, I was settled, needed to get some of his albums. But which one to start with? At first, I was pretty sure it was going to be ?Ah Via Musicom? his 1990 album, which features the track which I so love, but in HMV, my eyes drifted slightly to another album, the simply named ?LivefromAustin, TX?. Hmm, I thought, a live album. Typically speaking, a live album can either be great, or terrible ? either capturing the atmosphere of live music, the feelings, the ambience, the whole lot (i.e. Pink Floyd?s PULSE or Delicate Sound of Thunder), or it can be a bit crappy. surprising as he had just finished starring opposite JerryLewis in the acclaimed feature film "Funny Bones" and had finished starring in his own hit TV show "The World of Lee Evans". But despite the sub standard setting he still manages to turn out one hilarious anecdote after the other.
One sketch that really sticks in my memory includes a story in which he asks a person for directions in a busy place. It turns out that the guy is a complete moron and with Lees' visual effects and comic voices a classic sketch is born; I have since then seen this story being told by him in more recent shows such as Wired and Wonderful.

Recording information: 1983. In 1998, when Jerry Lee Lewis performed the Austin City Limits show from which this recording is taken, the Killer was already in his sixties, but he plays with the power and vitality of a 20-year-old. He sounds just as authoritative plowing his way through his '50s classics ("Great Balls of Fire," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On") and his later country-oriented material ("39 and Holding"). He also breathes new life into tunes associated with his heroes (Hank Williams's "You Win Again") and his peers (Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16"). Rattling the piano keys like a man possessed and hollering like a Baptist preacher with his pants on fire, Lewis makes it plain why he is considered both one of rock & roll's founding fathers and one of the longest keepers of the flame.
