official live set, a 25-song double-disc collection that surveys each of his four albums and adds a couple of well-executed, if not terribly inventive, covers. Disc one is electric and finds Harper and the Innocent Criminals tearing through their patented mix of rock, folk, soul and blues. Yet the solo acoustic disc two is the true prize, putting the spotlight squarely on Harper's incredibly agile, versatile and enormously moving voice. In this pared-down setting, Harper shows an uncanny ability to connect with his audience, offering one spellbinding performance after another. Culled from two years' worth of shows--no two songs are taken from the same concert--Live from Mars provides a welcome overview of Harper's many facets. --Marc Greilsamer

Advantages: Classic album tracks, amazing covers, huge range Disadvantages: Only the cardboard cover if you prefer plastic!
Ben Harper is an inspirational singer who uses music as a medium through which he can divulge his strongly held views. His influences (as you will be able to tell from the album) are many and vaired: a soulful rendition of "Sexual Healing" contrasts with a riproaring cover of Led Zep's 'Whole Lotta Love'.
The album is made up of two CDs neither of which can lay claim to being superior. Both show off the diversity of Harper's ... ...listener his powerful polemics.
Rather aptly the second CD finishes with the thought provoking adaptation of postcolonial poet Maya Angelou, 'I'll Rise'. I saw Harper perform this at Brixton Academy to 2000 people without a microphone whilst performing the black power salute. It was testament to the fire that burns within him and was redolent of all that the album provides: passion, integrity and sincerity.

If you have never listened to Ben Harper before then this album is an ideal introduction to his music. His style is generally laid back with beautiful acoustic tracks supported by moody bass. However, Haper's inner fire will suddenly burst forth at moments as he is accompanied by his Weissenborn (a brand of lap slide guitar).
Haper uses his music to rally against the world's evils such as the loss of civil liberties, racism and globalisation while he also presents his more sensitive and vulnerable sides through ballads such as "Waiting on an Angel". Though often the subjects can be fairly bleak the music is conversely very uplifting. Relaxing and with a loving spoonful of moody bass you are sure to feel chilled out even without the need to "Burn One Down"!
Finally, if you are an amateur guitar player then Harper provides a whole catalogue of songs that are easy enough to recreate in your own bedroom.A trivial point, perhaps, but one that may be useful when you fall in love with Harper's songs like I did!
Advantages: Classic Ben Harper with a choice of chilled out or rockin'! Disadvantages: The all-paper sleeve is a bit flimsy
This live double album is the best Ben Harper album ever...and Ben fans will know that there is some stiff competition!
Anyone who has ever seen Ben Harper in concert will know that he is a spectacular and spellbinging live artist. This album captures the live experience brilliantly and would also be the perfect introduction to Ben Harper for those who are new to his music.
This all-live album is spread over two discs - one of which showcases the ... ...Ben's smooth, beautiful voice shine through. The album features great renditions of all his classic tracks, including 'Excuse Me Mr', 'Steal my Kisses' and 'Another Lonely Day'... and many, many more. The album also features two brillant covers, a soulful version of the Marvin Gaye song, 'Sexual Healing' and a mellow take on the Verve's, 'The Drugs Don't Work.'
If you are a Ben Harper fan and you haven't heard this album, buy it now...if you don't ...

Advantages: Everything, Lyrics, music BEN HARPER! Disadvantages: none
BenHarper and Fight For Your Mind is one of my all time classic albums and I wish someone had told me about this fantastic performer and his many fantastic albums. I have several of his albums, (livefromMars and Greatest hits) but this one is by far the best.
I was first introduced to BenHarper by a passing friend who was from Brazil. He had the album and played it when we went round his for a drink and it was the most peaceful and serene moments I can remember. The music certainly set scene and i will always remember our friend every time i hear these tracks.

Album Notes
Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals: Ben Harper (vocals, guitar); Juan Nelson (bass, background vocals); Dean Butterworth (drums, background vocals); Nick Rich, Rahzel (background vocals). Throughout the '90s, Ben Harper's blend of blues, funk, soul, and folk quietly earned him a hardcore following of diehard fans over the span of four studio albums. For the two-CD LIVE FROM MARS, Harper and his tight three-piece band the Innocent Criminals cull performances from a variety of concerts, featuring interesting arrangements and odd nuances applied to his best-known songs, along with an eclectic array of covers. Armed with his hollow-neck '20s-era Weissenborn lap slide guitar, Harper rages throughout the plugged-in Disc One with highlights including the human-beat box-driven radio hit "Steal My Kisses," and the churning opening number "Glory & Consequence." "Burn One Down," a sprightly ode to herb, evokes Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," while a simmering "Sexual Healing" channels the spirit of Marvin Gaye. Unplugged and introspective, Disc Two overflows with Biblical metaphors captured in delicate numbers like "Waiting on An Angel," "Power of the Gospel," and "In the Lord's Arms." Tying it all together is a heartfelt reading of the Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work," and the epic 10-minute closer "Like a King/I'll Rise," featuring lyrics borrowed from a Maya Angelou poem.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (5/10/01, pp.84,86) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...This generous live set...shows off his influences exceptionally....Harper's range is so broad and his technical ability beyond that of so many of his peers..." Entertainment Weekly (3/30/01, pp.66-7) - "...Ideal for the hardcore fans as well as the uninitiated....Harper's roots are exposed for all to see....Both his singing and melodies have a calming, Zen-like quality..." - Rating: B+ CMJ (4/9/01, p.26) - "...A treat for those who dig a little message with their neo-blues jamming..."
