London in Bits and Bobs

Advantages: One of the world's great cosmopolitan centers
Disadvantages: So much city . . . so little time

sometimes cumbersome but always scenic. Travel by tube is convenient and efficient, but it tends to be a tad sterile. Juggling these options against their likely outcomes works effectively for those with ambitious schedules. For those so inclined, sightseeing buses offer hop-on, hop-off convenience for a single daily fee, at times including some routes with evening hours or a Thames River cruise. Tour buses provide a practical, on-the-spot orientation to the city and its sights, and most offer some sort of guide recitation--either through an actual living-and-speaking human being or through tapes and earphones. Transportation by means of a personal automobile is not an option except for the skillful or the foolhardy. There are no traffic jams quite like those in London. One-way streets, congestion, and poor signage can make driving ...

Review of London (England)

Stranded in London!

Advantages: Excellent central location; good bars and restaurants
Disadvantages: Rooms a bit old fashioned; a little pricey

" - the inner courtyard of the hotel with the humming air conditioners at the bottom. I can live (or sleep) with that, but there was also an awful rattling, like pipes, coming from somewhere in the ceiling. We went back downstairs to complain, and were told there were no other rooms. After standing our ground they eventually checked us in to an alternative room on the 4th floor. A little bigger, but still not brilliant - probably "average", from past business stays down in London hotels. The reception staff weren't particularly friendly, as other reviews have mentioned. Despite being "club" rooms, all that appeared to be different was the decor. Instead of old-fashioned wall-to-wall flowerey decor and furnishings, it was plain duck-egg walls, and a "modern" bed (faux-leather headboard and plain brown and green blankets). Not worth the extra money ...

Review of The Strand Palace Hotel, London

"For the first time in my life I am enjoying being myself."

Advantages: Sweet,Nice, Lovely, Wonderful, Witty---- get the picture??
Disadvantages: A little politically incorrect, but what the heck!!

'Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day' Winifred Watson I do hope that by reviewing this wonderful little book I introduce at least a few of you to the pleasure of reading the 250 pages in the book. ?Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day? reads like a fairy story, it is like a modernised version of Cinderella, when I say modernised I am referring to the 1930?s. Really finding this book for me was like finding hidden treasure. The book had been published in 1938 and then seemed to disappear. When Persephone Books was looking for title suggestions, Henrietta Twycross-Martin took in her mother's battered copy to the London office and the book was reprinted in 2000. Persephone concentrates in forgotten classics - "mainly neglected fiction and non-fiction by women, for women and about women." In 2008 a film based on the book ...
