Album Notes: Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Alan Broadbent (conductor); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Ron Mounsey (keyboards); John Pisano (acoustic guitar); Anthony Wilson (guitar); John Clayton, Christian McBride (bass); Jeff Hamilton, Lewis Nash (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); The Orchestra Symphonique European. Recorded live at the Paris Olympia, Paris, France on November 29-30 & December 1-2, 2001 and Avatar Studios, New York, New York. LIVE IN PARIS won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Diana Krall is best known as a purveyor of gently drifting ballads, with a trademark laconic delivery. Such preconceptions may be slightly nudged, if not altered, when her LIVE IN PARIS concert document kicks off with a swinging, up-tempo "I Love Being Here With You" that finds her making like Annie Ross, while also giving her top-shelf band a chance to blow. Aficionados of those aforementioned narcotized standards will soon be set to their ease however, as Krall moves slowly and deliberately through the likes of "Let's Fall in Love" and a bossa nova-tinged "I've Got You Under My Skin," her voice sailing atop a velvet sea of strings provided by Alan Broadbent and the Orchestra Symphonies European. Towards the end of the program, she turns to more modern contributors to the Great American (or in one case, Canadian) Songbook, offering a solo piano-and-vocal rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" and a decidedly pop-oriented studio take on Billy Joel's ubiquitous "Just the Way You Are."
Advantages: Beautiful voice, good melodies Disadvantages: Slighty down-beat
...Released in April 2004, this album is quite old - however, at the moment, it is constantly on my stereo. If you're interested and lucky, you should be able to get this album for less than a tenner . This is Diana's seventh studio album.
The album is interspersed with some of Diana's own creations (written with her husband Elvis Costello) and some covers. Overall the sound is one of jazz, and the melodies beautiful. It's not an incredibly upbeat album in terms of the tunes, but there are a few songs that pack a punch, e.g. Stop this World is a robust opener that may stop you in your tracks (this is a cover of a song by Mose Allison)!
The title track, The Girl in the Other Room written with Elvis Costello is a lovely piano melody, with Krall's voice sounding quite mysterious. Temptation is a cover of a Tom Waits song (one of my...

Advantages: A wonderful Jazz album with emotion Disadvantages: A couple of dud notes?
...After I read another review of this album, I knew I had to get it. It was everything I look for in an album and I managed to find it for 4gbp at my local supermarket which I believe to be an unbelieveable buy.
DianaKrall has been around for a long time and although I had heard of her, I did not realise what an impact she would have on my taste in music. Diana is a Jazz artist and after seeing her in a live performance, everything she does is so effortless she makes singing and piano playing look ever so easy.
