him is arguably his best group since those far away days with Django Reinhardt. There are many reasons for this. The band had been playing together for over two years at the time of this recording, which is the only recording ever made of this group.
Advantages: One of the worlds guitar virtuoso's Disadvantages: Non-guitarists and non-rock fans may get a little bored
JoeSatriani is considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists to have ever lived. He manages to combine technical brilliance with melody to produce some excellent and powerful songs. He plays a good rock song too.
'LiveInSanFrancisco' was recorded at The Fillmore and finds Joe and his band (then consisting of Jeff Campitelli on drums, Stu Hamm on Bass and Eric Caudieux handling keyboards and additional guitar duties) on top form. It offers about two-and-a-half hours' worth of music, with tracks ranging from his 1986 release, 'Not Of This Earth' through to, (his then latest album), 'Engines Of Creation' from 2000.
The performances from Joe and the rest of the band are flawless. It's also clear to see that they're all enjoying themselves and this helps to add to the overall experience. Joein particular seems to feed ...
Advantages: Amust have for guitar aficionados Disadvantages: Maybe for a certain audience
Instrumental guitar albums played by guitar virtuosos are not to everyones taste. Indeed only guitar players tend to show an interest, but JoeSatriani has stradled the line between cult and mainstream more than most of his contempories. Self taught and teacher to other notable names in the field Satriani has released 15 albums highlighting his brand of distorted riffs and catchy leads. This anthology brings his best work under one package, encompassing his full twenty year career up to that point. His abiltiy to deliver a song where the guitar sounds like a lead vocal by use of beautifully composed melodic licks is the secret to his succsess.
Still his best works, his 1987 album "Surfing with the Alien" gets decent representation here. "Always with Me, Always with You" is an exceptional love song with a wonderful palm muted intro ...
Advantages: ok recording quality of an ok gig Disadvantages: better to watch the dvd, but it's not Iggy at his best.
It's cheap and cheerful, but frankly not very good.
Iggy Pop was not, let's be honest, in the best of shape in 1981. This album was recorded at the end of a long bout of touring in support of one of his least loved albums - Party.
Now Iggy is usually worth seeing in concert and this album is actually the soundtrack of a home video / DVD which is still available. The film shows a rather inebriated Iggy giving a half-hearted performance with only flashes of his usual brilliance. The fact that he's wearing suspenders and stockings adds to the uneasiness. But at least it makes the film worth seeing.
The CD, on the other hand, just come across as half-cocked. The band aren't bad, but aren't especially impressive either (despite the presence of Bowi'e guitar player Carlos Alomar) and iggy's half mumbled half shouted vocals just sound bad ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Joe Satriani (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Eric Caudieux (guitar, keyboards); Stu Hamm (bass); Jeff Campitelli (drums). Recorded live in San Francisco, California in December 2000. "Always With Me, Always With You" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. For the two-disc LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO, Joe Satriani takes a career-spanning tour of a back catalog dating back to his full-length 1986 debut NOT OF THIS EARTH. Aided and abetted by a trio of longtime supporting musicians led by fellow virtuoso and bassist extraordinaire Stu Hamm, Satch soars on longtime favorites like the furiously intense "One Big Rush," ludicrously speedy "Surfing With The Alien," and swaggering neo-funk of "Satch Boogie." Belying a reputation for fleet-fingered histrionics, Satriani uses this live outing to trade in some speed for a degree of tonal and stylistic nuance. Among the best examples are the heartfelt "Until We Say Goodbye" with its wealth of crying guitar and pathos-laced phrasing, the quasi-waltz that is "Always With Me, Always With You," and delicate closer "Rubina," peppered with sweet chords and swirling synths. Hamm's contributions are equally worthy, whether the pair of solos he tosses into the midst of the relentless "Raspberry Jam" or the poignant "Bass Solo" with its clever quote of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." Although the lengthy set occasionally borders on the fringes of sameness, the twists and turns of Satch's dazzling fretboard heroics serve as an effective stimulant.
