existed to gain a greater foothold in America for Jethro Tull following the breakthrough success of Aqualung. And it did, by offering a little something for everyone. There are a number of songs that became FM radio staples, ranging from the heavy rock of "Teacher" and "Hymn 43" to lighter fare, such as the title tune. A pair of jam-heavy selections, "By Kind Permission Of" and "Dharma for One" (featuring the era's requisite in-concert drum solo), were recorded live at Carnegie Hall. Overall, Living in the Past does an excellent job of revealing Tull's achievements and limitations, its ambitions as well as its pretensions. --Daniel Durchholz

...The bands second album. While Abrahams was being replaced Black Sabbaths Tony Iommi stood in and actually features on the video for The Rolling Stones “Rock’n Roll Circus” in December 1968. For this album long serving Martin Barre replaced Abrahams and the JethroTull band was reborn. Living In The Past heralded the bands first hit which got to number three in the charts and this also heralded the bands first appearance on Top Of The Pops. The album is complemented with rockers like “Nothing Is Easy” and “A New Day Yesterday”, the classical “Bouree” and the romantic “Reaons For Waiting” with the introduction of mandolins. The album went number 1 and “Sweet Dream” became another hit reaching number 5 in the U.K....

Advantages: Fantastic Concept Album Disadvantages: Some People Might Not Get The Joke
...This is a excellent concept album whose 45 minutes of continuous music and abstract lyrics were a sociological examination of a childs experience in a modern world context supposedly composed by child prodigy Gerald Bostock . This was an in band joke enhanced by a spoof newspaper included with the albums sleeved and reproduced on the new CD re-mastered edition . This was Tull’s first American number 1 album. This is one of Tull’s funniest albums to date. It was meant to be a bit of satire about the whole idea of grand rock-band concept albums. This humour was displayed more and more in the live shows at this time....

...JethroTull are probably one of the most underestimated bands in the world. They have written some great albums over the years and have also inspired people like Brian May. The band has had many different line up changes over 30 plus years but Ian Anderson has always remained the mysterious and charismatic lead singer & multi-instrumentalist. I think this compilation shows the sheer power and diversity of one of Britains greatest progressive rock bands. Over the years JethroTull have touched Folk Rock, Rock, Blues and Hardrock. Ian Anderson has created his own style in playing the flute.
The compilation contains 12 tracks.
