Additional notes
Album Notes: Personnel: Neil Young (vocals); Tommy Bray (trumpet); Rick Rosas (bass instrument); Chad Cromwell (drums). Neil Young has never been one to avoid political commentary. Ever since "Ohio," his classic anthem of moral outrage about the Kent State student massacre in 1970, Young's music has pulled no punches about the injustices of American policy both foreign and domestic. 2006's LIVING WITH WAR continues that trend; in fact, the album is the most overtly political of Young's long, dazzling career. A collection of protest songs that takes the Bush administration directly to task for their actions in Iraq and elsewhere, LIVING WITH WAR boils with outrage and aches with pathos (the grungy, midtempo opener "After the Garden" is a fine example of the latter). "Let's Impeach the President" and "Lookin' for a Leader" leave little question as to Young's opinion of George W., while the crunching, electric-guitar-heavy feel of the album underscores Young's bitter aggression. The album draws on the artist's lineage to the socially conscious activism of the 1960s, yet it feels energized, angry, contemporary, and timely, further highlighting Young's status as one of rock's longest-running and most integrity-driven heroes. This deluxe version of Neil Young's hard-hitting anti-war album contains a DVD with war-related news footage, clips of war protests, clips from Al Gore's film about global warming, and music videos, directed by Young himself, for the songs on the accompanying album.
Album Reviews: Rolling Stone (p.226) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n indictment of the sorry state of open debate in this country...It is also an impressive measure of Young's refusal to burn out or fade away that he states his case with clarity as well as dirty garage-trio momentum." Entertainment Weekly (p.82) - "The power-trio arrangements have a let-it-rip simplicity; the lyrics are like stream-of-consciousness postings." -- Grade: B+ Q (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5-- "[A] revelation, brimming with passion and some of the best melodies Young has penned in the last 30 years." Mojo (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Urgent, instant, bolshie mostly, with a stronger individual sense than, say, GREENDALE..."
Advantages: beautiful music, makes life worth living Disadvantages: I REALY WISH THE AUDIO QUALITY WAS GOOD
...an eternal optimist and always in search of ?A heart of gold?
"I have been to Hollywood, I?ve been to Redwood
I crossed the Ocean for a heart of gold
I?ve been in my mind, it?s such a thin line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold.
I?m getting old
Keeps me searching?"
"I wanna live, I wanna give...it's these expressions I never give that keep me searching for a heart of gold. And I'm getting old." That?s typical NeilYoung for he is never bored of life, this makes life worth living.
Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, John Lenon, Jimi Hendrix ?probably the best in terms of talent, versatality, creativity.
I am a diehard Beatles maniac but okay take one of the best of Beatles album but let me keep "Harvest" any day, please....

Advantages: Great Tracks Throughout With Some of The Best Lyrics Around Disadvantages: There's A World Slackens The Pace A Bit
...away from simple horizons, looking to gain some place in society, taking yourself from the joyless lonely boy to man with someone to love, with a purpose in his new home and life. It is not so much about new beginnings, as it is about new found recognition, although not necessarily artistic. NeilYoung has written many songs about near distant loves, woman not quite in the picture but still in your mind, and this is one of those, with the references to a life untold in greater detail, it is what is left unsaid. The backing behind the vocals and lyrics though do give it a suitable feel, taking on a Nashville edge with a bit of country and folk mixed into a slightly more lyrically complex song than otherwise may have been seen.
2. Harvest *****
The ideas in this song continue in a similar vein to that of Out On The Weekend, with the singer...

Advantages: Alternative country/rock classic Disadvantages: none
...on at the time of recording. The heavy sense of loss and longing also hangs over this record like a calming breeze, particularly in the Needle and the Damage done, a heart-felt song written about Danny Whitten - guitar player inNeil's part time backing band "Crazy Horse".The line "every junkie's like a setting sun" always stands out in a way that is both timeless, evocative and beautiful.
The other stand out song for me, is Old Man - a yearning and poetic song about an old caretaker who livedinNeil's Broken Arrow farm in California. The words strike a chord with me, particularly how the already wealthy 24 year old NeilYoung refuses to be constrained by the trappings of fame and how the dignity of the old man in the song is something which Neil's sees in himself, or what he wants to see in himself. Neil to this today remains an unbowed man who...
