That same year, the two paired up once again to create the spectacular musical special Liza with A Z, making television history - and carting home four Emmys in the process. Now, Liza and the Executive Producers of the Academy Award - winning Chicago bring the glamour and glitter to DVD for the very first time on Dolby Digital 5.1.Restored, Remastered and Remarkable!
Advantages: Lots of up-tempo music Disadvantages: Sounds too much like a solo Minnelli album
The Act is a musical by my favourite Broadway team of songwriters, John Kander and Fred Ebb, and yet I always find it a little disappointing. Famous for writing Cabaret, Chicago and New York, New York, the two of them supplied a series of star turns for LizaMinnelli, as a nightclub star, and hence the C sounds very much like a Liza album, with a couple of other tracks thrown in.
The songs aren't bad, and some of them are rather good indeed. 'Arthur in the Afternoon'. for example, is top notch comedy, delivered perfectly by Liza, and the number sung by the chorus members (presumably while Liza had forty winks to get her breath back), 'Little Do They Know', works very well as an insiders view of being a Broadway-type dancer. There is also a lovely ballad called 'My Own Space', which Minnelli carries off fairly well.

, Dulcie and Pru. They are all in their early thirties and are great friends. They are also incredibly normal – no supermodels in glamorous locations here, oh no. They eat junk food, go to health clubs just to be seen, argue with their blokes, have bad hair days and get migraines.
For their New Year’s resolutions, Liza vows to get married, after a succession of short flings with gorgeous men she soon gets bored of. Dulcie decides to finally divorce her dull, workaholic husband, Patrick. Pru just hopes to stay married to Phil, even though he’s an A1 b***ard. But, as we know, best made plans don’t always go according to plan…
The book is easy to get into, so you’ll soon be devouring great chunks in one sitting, unable to even go to the loo without taking it with you. Although there are over 400 pages, it ...

LIZA WITH A "Z" is recorded from her 1972 TV special. Recording information: 1972. Bubbling with life and energy as she dramatizes these songs, Liza Minnelli is here in her usual top form. Recently adorned with an Academy Award for her role in "Cabaret" two years earlier, the 26-year-old Minnelli performs these songs with a giggling joy and breathless desire, singing "Yes" in particular with such frantic zeal one fears she'll exhaust herself before this live concert reaches intermission. But she wails without let up, belting out the emotional rollercoaster "It Was a Good Time" with terrific passion. Funky and raucous, her hot handling of "I Gotcha" is as soulful as her electric guitar and organ accompaniment. The songwriting team of Kander and Ebb, composers of "Cabaret," supply much of Minnelli's material, such as the anecdotal fun of "Ring Them Bells," which, like the stirring "Cabaret" medley, is especially suited to Minnelli's multi-faceted singing.
